Principal Mechanical Engineer

Description - Job Summary • This role is responsible for leading large, cross-division functional teams or projects that affect the organization's long-term goals and objectives. The role identifies and evaluates new technologies and drives innovation. The role acts as a functional manager and leverages domain expertise to influence decisions, develop strategy, functional policy and direction.

Responsibilities Design for Automation:

Develop product designs that are optimized for automated and robotic assembly processes. Collaborate with automation engineers to ensure designs can be efficiently produced with minimal human intervention. Create detailed design documentation and specifications for manufacturing teams.

Sustainable Design:

Select and integrate sustainable materials into product designs. Design products to minimize environmental impact, including reducing waste and energy consumption during manufacturing. Ensure products are easy to disassemble for recycling or reuse, avoiding the use of non-recyclable adhesives and harmful chemicals.

AI Integration:

Explore and implement novel uses of AI to assist in the assembly and re-use of products. Collaborate with AI specialists to develop smart assembly techniques and predictive maintenance models. Stay informed about advancements in AI that can enhance product lifecycle and sustainability.

Product Lifecycle Management:

Conduct lifecycle analysis to assess the environmental impact of products from conception to disposal. Implement design strategies that enhance the durability and longevity of products. Advocate for circular economy principles in product development.

Collaboration and Innovation:

Work closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, and marketing. Stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in automation, AI, and sustainable design. Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute to the continuous improvement of design practices.

• Develops organization-wide architectures and methodologies for mechanical and thermal design and development across multiple platforms and organizations within the Global Business Unit. • Identifies and evaluates new technologies, innovations, and outsourced development partner relationships for alignment with technology roadmap and business value; creates plans for integration and update into architecture. • Leads large, cross-division functional teams or projects that affect the organization's long-term goals and objectives • Leads and/or executes engineering projects and spearheads research and development of new technologies, as appropriate. • Manages headcount, deliverables, schedules, and costs for multiple ongoing projects, ensuring that resources are appropriately allocated and that goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets are met in accordance with program and organizational roadmaps. • Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development guidelines and standards; integrates suggestions, updates, and innovations into overall architecture. • Leverages recognized domain expertise, business acumen, and experience to influence decisions of executive business leadership, outsourced development partners, and industry standards groups. • Collaborates and communicates with management, internal, and outsourced development partners regarding design status, project progress, and issue resolution. • Provides guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff members on mechanical and thermal design innovation and excellence.

Education & Experience

Recommended 3+ years of experience in product design with a focus on automation, AI, and sustainability. Proven track record of designing products for automated assembly lines. Experience with sustainable materials and design for recyclability. Exposure to AI applications in manufacturing and product design is a plus.

• Four-year or Graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence. • Typically has 10+ years of work experience, preferably in engineering design and solutions, implementation across hardware development lifecycle, or a related field. Preferred Certifications Certification in sustainable design or green engineering. Experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) tools and methodologies. Familiarity with regulatory standards related to environmental impact and product safety. Experience in integrating AI solutions in manufacturing processes.

Knowledge & Skills Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and design for manufacturing (DFM) principles. Knowledge of automation technologies and robotic systems. Strong understanding of sustainable design practices and materials science. Familiarity with AI tools and technologies applicable to product design and assembly. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
