CLASS TITLE DEFINITION (Based on §18A-4-8):
Sanitation Plant Operator:
Employed to operate and maintain a water or sewage treatment plant to ensure the safety of the plant's effluent for human consumption or environmental protection.

Custodian:
1. Keep buildings clean and free of refuse.
2. Make minor repairs.
3. Perform duties in a support capacity including, but not limited to, facilitating in the instruction and direct or indirect supervision of pupils under the direction of a principal, a teacher, or another designated professional educator.

NATURE OF THE WORK
To operate, monitor, and trouble-shoot the wastewater treatment facility and its processes at Calhoun County Middle/High School and Pleasant Hill Elementary. Work involves responsibility for the technical aspects of plant operations, and compliance with state and federal operating regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Check that all tank walls are enough above the adjacent ground level to be certain that surface water cannot enter the plant.
  • Visually check color and appearance of the activated sludge in the aeration chamber.
  • Check to see that he motor-blower unit operates satisfactorily and that air distribution is equally distributed along the length of the tank.
  • Check to see that the spray pump operates satisfactorily and that all spray nozzles are free.
  • Check to see that sludge air lift pump is operating satisfactorily and that the discharge pipe is running approximately 1/3 full and that the effluent is in the right tank.
  • Check to see that the air lift skimmer is working properly and that the skimmer height is properly adjusted.
  • Check clarifier liquid surface for floating chunks. Break up and return to the aeration chamber if present. Gently scrape all of the sides with paddle provided if chunks are present.
  • Clean debris from the submerged bar screen and dispose of any such items in a proper manner.
  • Check the chlorinator for proper operation. Refill chlorine solution container when necessary.
  • Clean grease and scum accumulations from the walls of the aeration chamber
  • Check oil level in the blower
  • Grease two (2) fittings on the blower. Be sure to remove plugs directly below fittings to prevent rupture of the grease seals.
  • Check the time setting on the time clocks.
  • Scrape all walls and hoppers of the settling chamber.
  • Clean trash and weeds from area around the plants.
  • Check and clean the trash trap.
  • Check V-belts for proper tension and wear. Replace if necessary.
  • Check the blower air filter. Clean or replace if necessary.
  • Check to see if both manual and automatic motor-blower controls are operating satisfactorily.
  • Check general appearance of electrical connections and electrical control panel.
  • Check oil level in blower gear case and add if required.
  • Operate all valves and other equipment not normally used during the daily operation to see that they work properly.
  • Change blower oil
  • Inspect electrical control panel for frayed wires, corroded contacts, and signs of overheating or other improper conditions.
  • Inspect plant protective coating and repair if required to prevent major rusting.
  • Maintain plant and adjacent area in a clean, attractive manner.
  • Document treatment to the plant
  • Complete quarterly reports to the appropriate governing agencies
  • Other work as assigned by the Chief of Operations of Administrative Services

WORK REQUIREMENTS
  • Be able to perform and document various tests required by State and Federal agencies for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Perform routine checks of the wastewater treatment process and periodic checks of pump stations.
  • Have a working knowledge of the operation, methods and procedures of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of mechanical equipment and the ability to diagnose and correct equipment malfunction.
  • Have a working knowledge of basic machinery preventive maintenance and repair.
  • Have a basic knowledge of State and Federal rules governing wastewater discharges and worker's safety.
  • Have the ability to work independently and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment.
