Retention Coordinator

Assist students in academic support programs such as Akron Rises Scholars at The University of Akron and other retention initiatives. Guide students to achieve their educational goals by offering advisement, life coaching and support throughout their academic career. Serve as a liaison to other departments on campus and provide special services to traditional, non-traditional, post-baccalaureate, transfer, new and returning students. Assist in supporting diverse students throughout their pursuit of a professional degree. Provide program/project planning and management and case management/advising. Establish and build rapport through collaboration with internal and external partners. Supervise and train professional and student staff, implement new strategies and initiatives for student success.
Essential Functions:
40% Support and advise students regarding academic matters and the educational alternatives open to them. Interpret and disseminate information to students regarding University requirements and academic/administration procedures. Contact students and maintain relationships to monitor academic progress. Advise students at new student orientation programs regarding
interpretation of placement assessment, curricular requirements related to academic objectives, career options and registration
procedures. Assist with first year initiatives for first year students.
25% Provide academic advising, life coaching, and mentoring to students. Assist students in contacting appropriate campus and community resources.
20% Maintain accurate student records. Act as a liaison to other departments.
10% Program development and implementation
5% Supervision of student staff.

Required Qualifications:
Education:
Requires a relevant Master's Degree.
Experience:
Requires a minimum of 2 years' work experience in academic advising and/or counseling within an education setting and/or social service setting or related fields. Strong organizational skills and basic computer skills including word processing and database capabilities, and excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to provide case management and student
support services in a higher education setting required. Experience working with non-traditional, minority and/or first-generation populations in an educational setting required. Knowledge of and experience developing curriculum and a willingness and ability to travel for recruiting purposes and be available for evening advising required.
Preferred Qualifications: Event planning experience preferred. Familiarity
with campus resources and University policies and procedures preferred.
