Summary Description Under the direct supervision of the principal. Building Engineer and Zone Supervisor. Employees in this position perform routine and special custodial assignments required to ensure a clean and safe learning environment is provided for all students in Memphis Shelby County Schools. Essential Job Functions Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and renews floor surfaces utilizing floor scrubbing and polishing machines, vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines and other motorized cleaning equipment. Clean door mats, boiler flues, light fixtures, lamps, window shades and blinds, drinking fountains, chalkboards, walls, rails, heating and air-conditioning units, and trash containers as Police outside grounds area immediately around school facility as required. Dust or polishes furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windowsills, doors, trim and related furnishings. Washes and/or cleans interior and exterior window and door glass. Cleans and services lavatories, restrooms, locker rooms and shower rooms. Removes broken glass, paper, and debris from grounds, play areas and parking lots that may cause an unsafe environment. Cleans cooling towers and changes air filiters. Sweeps or shovels snow and/or ice from outside steps, walks, fire escapes, building entrance and connecting walks as required. Collects wastepaper, boxes and other debris and empties into appropriate outside waste containers. Moves furniture such as teacher's desks, file cabinets, bookcases, tables, chairs, student desks and miscellaneous items and equipment as instructed. Replaces burned out lamps, broken windows, door glass, window shades and blinds as instructed. Performs duties that require the use of ladders. Reports to supervisor, items that need repair or any unsafe equipment or condition. Meets Board of Education mail truck as requested. Must be available to open or close the building in the Building Engineer's absence. Reports all problems to the Principal in the Building Engineer's absence. Reports problems to Zone Supervisor when Principal and Building Engineer are not Zone Supervisor has no direct supervisory responsibility over Lead Custodian. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed. Minimum Qualifications Education -- Minimum of tenth (10th) grade preferred. Degree Equivalency Formula: Bachelor's Degree = 4 years plus required years of experience. Master's Degree = 6 years plus required years of experience. Additional Job Details Hours and Term of Employment Location: Zone 1 Schools Eight (8) hours per day. Twelve (12) months per year Most custodial work is performed inside; however, some duties must be performed outside under varying conditions. Must be physically able to perform all duties required by this position.
