Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Performs CT and special procedures.
- Receives orders for designated CT or special procedures. Discusses protocols and procedures with radiologist to assure proper interpretation of orders. Reviews information from patient's records; i.e. known allergies to IV or oral contrast media, previous barium studies, medication being used by patient and pertinent information used to achieve best possible images.
- Enters designated patient data into computer, chooses appropriate examination protocols and sets equipment for proper technique, model/type of exam, speed of scan, level of cross-sectional scans, etc. Completes all such preliminary tasks prior to patient's arrival to minimize patient's time on the table.
- Uses laser beam to check proper positioning and centering of patients. Attaches required immobilization and supportive devices. Obtains "scout view" on console to assure images will contain areas to be studied. Arranges patient in proper position for procedure.
- Manipulates equipment to enhance images and produce appropriate exposure. Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and physiology to detect abnormal patterns in images and uses independent judgment to obtain scans required to make proper diagnosis. Carries out special manipulation of display data, reformats to produce axial slices and creates an endless variety of plans and exposure angles, plotting of dynamic vascular or circulation studies, rapid scanning, high resolution review, segmentation, etc. Prints hard copies of images for permanent patient records and transfers scanning data from equipment to laser disk.
- Loads syringe with prescribed dye for hand or power injection. Maintains sterile techniques when preparing contrast media.
- Administers medications and adjusts power injector to coordinate timing of scan with administration of medication.
- As appropriate, sets up sterile trays for special procedures and assists Radiologist with such.
- Maintains radiation exposure level to minimize patient exposure. Protects visitor and general public from unnecessary radiation exposure.
- Arranges appropriate radiation protective devices so as to minimize radiation.
- Explains procedures to be performed to each patient. (+) Gives preparatory instructions. Provides reassurance to anxious patients.
- Maintains constant communication with patient via intercom system.
- (+) Reads reports to authorized staff over phones. (+) Answers inquiries and provides requested assistance on matters dealing with Radiology, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine and MRI services.
- Maintains communication with radiology to ensure proper protocol on each patient.
- (+) Assumes charge responsibility for section as required. Provides direction and assistance to technologists and support staff. Distributes work assignments.
- Reviews film for quality and readability and takes steps to assure that quality control standards are met.
- Performs daily quality control test on equipment including calibration checks, checking camera and film, cleaning film processor, etc. Brings computer "down" to resting stat to conduct designated testing procedures.
- Assists nuclear physicist with test for equipment efficiency and safety. Works with manufacturer to arrange monthly preventative maintenance and/or emergency repairs.
- Participates in preparing reports required by various federal and state agencies.
- Monitors and observes patient's condition and brings any unusual circumstances to attention of supervisor, nursing staff or radiologist. Initiates emergency procedures, within authorized limits, as required.
- Completes all required forms, records and reports concerning number and types of procedures performed. (+) Assists clerical support staff with patient scheduling, recording, keeping and related tasks. (+) Assists in assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand, when needed.
- Assists with training and orientation of new employees. (+) May be assigned in Radiology section as Radiology Technologist as part of regular work assignment.
- Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.
- As required, transports patients on stretchers or wheelchairs to and from examining room and other areas.
- Completes STAT reports and delivers to proper person.
- Remains available for emergency on-call as needed.
- Attends 66% of staff meetings.
- Attends monthly inservices.
- Acknowledges all tests to generate patient charges on a daily basis.
- Plans assignments so that appropriate coverage is provided for all patients and continuity of care is maintained.
- Supports staff in prioritization of work to be done.
- Acts as a role model in organizing tasks and personnel into an effective work plan.
- Anticipates potential problems and assists in problem solving as needed.
- Delegates duties to appropriate unit personnel as necessary.
- Schedules staff to minimize use of overtime and ensures efficient use of resources.
- Reviews revenue and expenses on a monthly basis (budget compared to actual) and recommends areas of growth and areas to reduce expenses if needed.
- Recommends equipment to improve quality of services and participates in the selection and installation of equipment as needed.
- Communicates with clarity and composure.
- Collaborates effectively with physicians, supervisors, multidisciplinary staff, and other departments.
- Provides effective collaboration as required in order to ensure approximate and timely services.
- Completes appropriate performance appraisals on time.
- As required by JCAHO, completes competency checklist on each employee during annual evaluation process.
- Increase the focus of support staff towards customer service.
- Handles disciplinary issues in accordance with Bristol Hospital policy. Updates Director as needed.
- Facilitates smooth transition regarding coverage issues.
- Assess the distribution of tasks and responsibilities as currently assigned.
- Ensures the services are in compliance with all regulatory standards, including but not limited to JCAHO, CMS and DEP.
- Reviews feedback from patients and makes necessary adjustments to improve patient satisfaction.
- Communicates effectively and acts as an information resource regarding modality specific policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Educational / Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma and two-year accredited program in Radiologic Technology
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
Radiologic Technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, (ARRT) and licensed in the state of Connecticut. Advanced certification in CT required.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital. Radiation Safety annually; all other mandated programs as they occur.
Special Requirements:
Registered Radiologic Technologist I, advanced certification in CT, at least one year experience in CT, and licensed in the state of Connecticut.
Physical Requirements:
On feet most of the day with lifting greater than 50 lbs. occasionally and up to 35 lbs. routinely. Physical agility including but not limited to bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, pulling, pushing and twisting. Hearing and sight corrected to normal. Ability to verbalize so the average person can comprehend. Manipulates CT equipment and data input. Assesses patient's response to medication and procedure.
Work Environment:
Radiation exposure, patient elements, chemical fume exposure. Frequent changes in lighting levels.
Cognitive Requirements:
Excellent oral communication skills, literate in English, excellent reading and mathematical skills, ability to read, comprehend and execute complicated and detailed written and oral instructions. Good organizational skills, excellent decision making skills and writing skills.
