Senior Director, Workforce & Career Development

Reporting directly to the Chief Impact and Strategy Officer (CISO) the Senior Director of Workforce & Career Development serves as the key programmatic, operations and administrative director for the Workforce & Career Development strategy, responsible for implementing the strategic plan and translating the strategy into actionable talent and operational practices, frameworks, resources, and results.

The Senior Director will lead the day-to-day activities while forging strong relationships and alignment with senior impact officers, impact officers, and other stakeholders that support this work throughout the Foundation and regional community by building a culture of shared accountability, strong communications, and decision-making transparency. The Senior Director is responsible for strong collaboration with peers, and a commitment to delivering a highly coherent grantmaking strategy under the direction of the CISO. They build trust with grantees and thought leaders in the space and have a sophisticated understanding of the workforce and career development field.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Recommends and implements the strategic goals for workforce development activities and operations, implementing a strategy that informs the Foundation's programs and practices and advances equity and impact in alignment with the Foundation's mission.
  • Provides strong leadership to the team, fostering a collaborative and innovative team environment and encourages continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Attracts, develops, coaches, and retains high-performance team members, empowering them to elevate their level of responsibility, span of control, and performance.
  • Ensures ongoing workforce and career development grantmaking impact excellence by operationalizing data, information, and experiences by implementing the strategy.
  • Ensures coordinated and strategically coherent grantmaking that advances the Foundation's equity agenda.
  • Implements processes that refine results, associated strategies, and performance indicators connected to the Foundation's funding priorities and initiatives.
  • Supports and oversees highly effective grantmaking strategies that are grantee-centric, focused on individual and community outcomes, are equity-focused and are explicitly aligned to the Foundation's 2024 grantmaking philosophy, goals, and priorities.
  • Oversees workforce development-related grantmaking portfolios and individual grants to advance results and achieve performance indicators tightly aligned with the Foundation's vision, in a manner that is collaborative and calibrated across the Strategy and Impact team.
  • Monitors the operational and financial performance of grantees and holds them accountable.
  • Allocates resources effectively, manages workload and ensures deadlines are met.
  • Leads and participates in conferences, symposia or other convenings as a representative of the Foundation.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates possession of competencies. Graduate degree in relevant field preferred.

Work Experience: At least ten years of supervisory and leadership experience in workforce and career development programs, philanthropic or nonprofit sector preferred. At least ten years of experience including managing grantmaking portfolios. Deep experience developing, leading and executing innovative workforce and career development related programs.

Travel: This position requires business travel.

  • Has demonstrated strong success managing funder relationships while being creative, mission-driven, and capable of working collaboratively with various constituent groups.
  • Is comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty, with the ability to adapt nimbly and lead others through complex situations.
  • Has excellent communication skills, including well-developed interpersonal, written, listening and presentation skills.
  • Prioritizes and multi-tasks effectively using excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Has the ability to function well in a high-paced and at times, stressful environment.
  • Is experienced with managing staff or teams, using strong coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Possesses financial acumen and experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Possesses a passion for "doing what is right," with unquestioned integrity, positive ethics and values reflective of the Kauffman Foundation.

  • Has strong computer literacy skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and business applications.
