Job Description Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director for Quality and Patient Safety, responsible for management of the hospital-wide infection prevention and control program, focusing on regulatory compliance and process improvement. May include participation in infection surveillance and the development and implementation of control measures. Plans and assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure rigorous infection prevention and control standards and compliance with regulatory requirements throughout the hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with Executive Director and Infection Prevention Team to develop and implement an infection prevention and control plan on an annual basis, as approved by the Infection Prevention Committee, including risk assessment and annual evaluation of the risk assessment and plan.
  • Assists team with ongoing surveillance using appropriate Infection Prevention criteria, including documentation and investigation of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) through review of admission diagnoses, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation requests, and post-discharge surveillance as needed.
  • Coordinates with Executive Director and IP team to develop and implement process improvement plans for hospital-acquired infections.
  • Works collaboratively with the Infection Prevention team, and other health professionals and departments, serving as the regulatory subject matter expert on Infection Prevention and Control for the hospital.
  • Consults and advises with Infection Preventionists at WTH community hospitals as needed.
  • Coordinates with Executive Director and IP team to develop, review and evaluate infection prevention and control education materials.
  • Prepares in-services and conducts training in both universal and specific infection prevention practices, supervises learning, and assists staff to integrate theory into practice.
  • Serves as infectious disease representative for hospital and community programs as assigned.
  • Utilizes current research data to support or change Infection Prevention and Control practice, ensuring compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory standards and regulations.
  • Assists with statistical data for reports. Assists with reporting data to hospital epidemiologist and appropriate committees.
  • Collaborates with the Quality Outcomes Department and the Patient Safety Officer on quality improvement programs to improve organizational performance.
  • Assists team to monitor the isolation of infectious diseases through communication with the Medical and/or Nursing staff.
  • Develops and maintains a cooperative and congenial relationship with public health authorities. May assist with the notification of appropriate outside agencies of any pertinent findings of communicable disease.
  • As directed by the Executive Director, serves as a contributing member of various hospital committees to improve care and/or select products to enhance Infection Prevention and Control measures.
  • Develops, updates, and evaluates Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for continuing education in a goal-directed manner.
  • May participate in environmental inspection and supervision of hospital staff activities to monitor possible infection risk hazards and to evaluate compliance with infection prevention policies.
  • Monitors compliance with ICRA containment plan.
  • May serve as department liaison for assigned departments, observe processes in those departments to identify opportunities and ways to improve infection prevention and control processes.
  • Infection Preventionists/Managers with a minimum of three years of experience in infection prevention will be expected to submit a plan to achieve CIC within twelve months.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
Qualifications

EDUCATION:
  • Skills and proficiency in principles, concepts, and techniques of the nursing profession as normally acquired through completion of an accredited school of a nursing program with a BSN preferred.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • Current Tennessee RN license, BSN preferred. Infection Control Certification preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures, legal and regulatory guidelines as normally acquired in 2 years of clinical practice.
  • Preferred knowledge of nursing practice and techniques, aseptic techniques, and infectious disease entities as normally acquired through 3 years of clinical experience.
  • Management experience preferred.
