Position Summary:

The Controller at the YMCA is a key financial leader responsible for overseeing all financial operations and ensuring the integrity of the financial processes and reporting. Managing a budget of $8.2 million, the Controller will ensure accurate financial management, compliance with all relevant regulations, and provide strategic financial insights to support the YMCA's mission of promoting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management and Reporting:
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.
  • Oversee the semi-monthly payroll process in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO, senior management, and the Board of Directors.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, collaborating with department heads to develop realistic and achievable budgets.
  • Monitor actual performance against budget, providing variance analysis and recommending corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop financial forecasts and projections to guide strategic planning.
  • Develop ad hoc budget plans and cost analysis to support grant applications or other funding opportunities
Internal Controls and Compliance:
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with YMCA policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the completion of annual audits and ensure timely resolution of any audit findings.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws and reporting requirements.
Cash Management:
  • Manage cash flow to ensure the organization meets its financial obligations and maximizes the return on investments.
  • Oversee the processing of accounts receivable, collections, and accounts payable to maintain liquidity and financial health.
  • Monitor and manage banking relationships and lines of credit.
Strategic Financial Planning:
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the organization.
  • Support the CEO and Executive Leadership in strategic planning and execution.
  • Identify and implement financial strategies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
Team Leadership and Development:
  • Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Ensure the finance team has the necessary tools and resources to perform their duties effectively.
Requirements

Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA designation preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role. Nonprofit experience, particularly within the YMCA or similar organizations, is highly desirable.
  • Skills: Strong technical accounting skills, proficiency in financial software, and advanced Excel capabilities. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting standards. Familiarity with nonprofit accounting and compliance requirements.
