The mission of American Public Media Group (APMG) and Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is creating the future of public media by amplifying voices to inform, include, and inspire. APMG's primary operating divisions Minnesota Public Radio, Southern California Public Radio, and American Public Media offer multi-regional FM broadcast channels, website, mobile and social media channels, live events, national content creation and distribution. Your Role:

Reporting to the President of MPR, The Director of Community Engagement is responsible for developing and implementing MPR's community engagement strategy and overseeing the department's day-to-day operation. This includes (1) developing and executing an inclusive and innovative community engagement plan, (2) building external partnerships, (3) working with individual content areas to engage in mutual learning with communities and organizations, (4) collaborating with the Network Stations team in greater Minnesota and the Events team in St. Paul and (5) tracking and reporting on community engagement activities (6) leading a high-performing revenue team. The Director leads MPR's community engagement program to ensure MPR maintains and expands its public media footprint, builds connections to secure new audiences, and fosters trust between MPR and the many and varied communities within Minnesota.

This role is part of the MPR Leadership team and will collaborate with MPR brand leaders and our diversity and inclusion leader. The leader will be responsible for ensuring community engagement is built into each service's plans, developing communication and integration techniques, and working closely with Audience Development.

Community Engagement and Strategic Relationship Development

  • Serves as a spokesperson and liaison between MPR and external community stakeholders.
  • Trains, develops, and supports MPR staff on community engagement skills, knowledge, and best practices.
  • Leverages strategic partners to deploy scalable pilots that create differentiation and achieve business objectives such as addressing Audience growth, serving BIPOC communities, etc.
Financial and New Business Development
  • Leads implementation and oversight of a multi-year budget for the department and manages Institutional Giving's annual budget and forecasting.
  • Understands the needs of current and potential funders working with Philanthropic Development and Underwriting to build mutually beneficial relationships that will lead to increased resources for existing and new programs.
  • Researches and identifies new philanthropic opportunities and builds external relations that create opportunities for expanded income and new resource development.
Leadership
  • Implements strategic initiatives and develops performance measures to advance MPR's community engagement and impact by using best practices.
  • Leads Institutional Giving staff in maintaining and growing financial support from regional and national funders and in the creation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of annual and multi-year grant funding strategies designed to maximize financial support.
  • Fosters diverse, inclusive, creative and productive work environment.
Expected Compensation Range: $110,000 to $140,000. Exact salary will be determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. Master's Degree, preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience collaborating and leading community-centered projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • 7+ years of active work and cultural knowledge of diverse communities.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic and business plans centering community engagement.
  • Commitment and passion for equity, inclusion, diversity, and access.
  • Ability and interest in public speaking and representing the organization at public events.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Established community network with nonprofit organizations, local, state, and federal governments, and public media.
  • Proven track record in fundraising and sustainable growth, operational management, and outcome-based impact programming.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
