JOB PURPOSE AND OVERVIEW The Dispute Resolution Program is a part of the Self Help Center and Dispute Resolution Department and provides mediation services for the Court. Many disputes that come to the program are mediated prior to the filing of formal legal action. The coordinator provides mediation services to the Court. These duties include conducting mediations, recruiting, training, and coordinating services by contractor and law student mediators, scheduling mediation sessions, and evaluating mediation services.The coordinator assesses the suitability of disputes for mediation and recommends referral to mediation. The coordinator has extensive contact with parties seeking mediation services. The coordinator responds to telephone inquiries, e-mails, and interviews, and otherwise assists individuals and businesses. The coordinator performs other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES OF THE POSITION Mediate disputes referred to mediation. Engage in extensive telephone, in-person, and email communication with parties before and after mediation to ensure the quality of services, parties’ ability to participate effectively, and monitor and assist the final resolution of disputes. Conduct intake interviews, including screening for domestic violence, to determine the appropriateness of cases for mediations. Coordinate the scheduling and re-scheduling of mediations by working with staff and mediators to schedule and update cases referred for mediation. Communicate clearly with all parties and mediators to ensure understanding of the purpose and scope of mediation within the court system. File and maintain all documents regarding mediation results, including individual outcome reports for mediations. Maintain comprehensive statistics for all mediation programs and write reports for each program for submission to the court. Coordinate schedules for mediators assigned to specific cases for all programs. Work closely with faculty and supervising attorneys from the Moritz College of Law at the Ohio State University and from Capital University Law School, both of which provide trained law student mediators. Assist the director in preparing yearly budget requests and monitoring spending during the fiscal year. Coordinate the development and implementation of appropriate evaluation tools for the mediation programs and mediators. Assist in the development and implementation of new programs. Promote existing programs to expand the referral base. Participate in meetings, training programs, presentations, and other events as directed by the manager. Participate in special projects and programs as assigned by the manager. Perform other duties as assigned by the court. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have a combination of education, experience, skills, and personal characteristics that demonstrate the candidate’s ability to perform the duties of the position. It is expected that the successful candidate will have at least the following qualifications and meet the following requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience based on position description. Knowledge of common office practices, procedures, and equipment. Proficiency in operating a personal computer and using, or being able to learn to use, Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook, and Excel, and Courtview. Knowledge of legal terminology and trial court operations and procedures, particularly those that are relevant to the work of the Division and the Mediation Program. Knowledge of case management operations and processes. Knowledge of basic management principles, practices, and procedures. Project management experience, or a demonstrated knowledge of planning, implementing, and evaluating projects. Completion of basic mediation training or comparable educational course work. Experience mediating disputes and complaints. Strong analytical and organizational skills and the ability to function at a high level within a large, complex organization. Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures and resolve or recommend solutions to complex problems and situations. Ability to prioritize work, work independently without daily direct supervision, and manage a variety of projects simultaneously in a high-pressure atmosphere under time constraints. Must have good time-management skills and be highly organized and detail-oriented. Ability to professionally communicate verbally and in writing to diverse audiences and develop and maintain effective working relationships with judges, other elected officials, court employees, lawyers, outside agencies, businesses, and the general public. Ability to effectively write and produce concise, error-free documents and reports. Creativity and ability to conceive and implement innovative approaches to solve problems and meet objectives. Ability to recognize the need for change, respond with flexibility to changing program demands, propose solutions, and ensure that solutions are implemented. Pleasant personality and ability to interact and maintain effective working relationships with judges, employees, and others conducting business with the Court. Conscious of and sensitive to the diversity within the Court’s jurisdiction and ability to interact professionally with this diverse population of people from many different geographic, socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds on a regular basis. Professional appearance and demeanor appropriate for the position and expected of a representative of elected officials. Demonstrated dependability, reliability, and excellent attendance record. Patience, objectivity, maturity, effectiveness under stress, initiative, adaptability, leadership, and sound judgment. Preferred qualifications include experience mediating civil cases, working in a court or legal environment, or working in an administrative, management, or social work position. Additional consideration will be given to individuals who have any of the following qualifications: experience working within a multi-judge trial court; court-connected mediation experience, including meeting the Supreme Court of Ohio’s qualifications of a court-connected mediator; the ability to speak and write a language commonly used by people for whom English is a second language; or proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL). COURT EXPECTATIONS OF EMPLOYEE The Court expects employees will adhere to all court policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures; act as role models both inside and outside the Court; perform duties as workload necessitates in a timely, accurate and thorough manner; be conscientious about meeting department productivity standards; and communicate regularly with supervisors about department issues. Employees of the Court are at-will employees and serve at the pleasure of the Court; they are not in the classified civil-service system and are not members of bargaining units.
