Watertown, United States Boston Dynamics Full time

As a Staff Systems Engineer on the Perception and Safety R&D Team, you will join a small cross-functional group developing robotic perception technologies that will enable our robots to operate safely around people. Every day you will help develop and promote a new systems engineering effort spanning requirements generation, structured safety analysis, and testing. You will help develop integrated systems intended to make our robots safe and reactive. You will also help the team develop approaches to make specific safety claims about the operation of our robots.

The right candidate will help us chart a path to integrate industry best practices and cutting-edge technology to create novel solutions to one of the most important problems in robotics. If you are creative, thrive in a small team environment, and passionate about a world where humans and robots truly work together - come join us

How you will make an impact:

  • Help engineering teams understand relevant safety requirements and identify the efforts needed for meeting them
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to develop requirements, architectures, and test plans
  • Dig deep into data to extract important insights that drive requirements, design decisions, and development efforts
  • Compile requirements, analysis, and test evidence sufficient to develop statistical evidence for the safety of an autonomous system
  • Coordinate cross-functional technical efforts to develop robotic systems.
  • Work closely with a small team to design and prototype new payloads, platforms, and product features which deliver safety features for our robots.
We are looking for:
  • 3+ years of experience working in applications of robotics, autonomous vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems, industrial automation, or related industries
  • Enthusiasm for using data to understand problems and comfort in working with hardware and software to prototype potential solutions
  • Experience working in python and/or C++ to develop data analysis tools and robotics prototypes
  • Familiarity with relevant safety standards and how they impact the development of robotic systems, including IEC 61508, ANSI/RIA R15.08
  • Experience aggregating and compiling data to support safety claims, especially for autonomous systems
  • Experience developing test procedures and validation targets based on real-world use cases
  • Experience communicating effectively about safety engineering with engineering teams and executives
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to author technical documentation and deliver presentations on technical topics
  • History of leading cross-functional technical efforts through planning, technical requirement development, and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • History of working in small, interdisciplinary teams.
