About the Position

Position Description

United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is seeking an Associate Data Scientist with a passion for developing data driven products to advance the field of Transplantation. You'll be part of a team collaborating within Research and IT, working to develop and deploy machine learning models on diverse data (relational data, unstructured data, geospatial/image data, etc.). The goal of your work is to have a meaningful impact on the lives of those waiting for transplants or transplant recipients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Wrangling disparate data sources, both type and format, with the ability to formulate basic data pipelines.
  • Ability to apply analytical and data science techniques to derive insights and information from datasets.
  • Perform analytics on big data assets.
  • Collaborate with software development, DevOps, and Data Engineering teams for model training and deployment.
  • Serve as a department expert for computer science, software development and integration, as well as model deployment to production.
  • Leveraging domain knowledge and creativity to generate novel hypotheses
  • Exploring the adaptation of novel data science and machine learning applications to current issues in Transplantation.
Minimum Requirements

2 years of data science, computer programming or other related experience required.

Critical Requirements
  • Experience coding in SQL and Python.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience leveraging high performance computing or big data tools (Hive, Spark).
  • Strong written and oral English-language communication skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and to work independently and as part of a team, are required.
  • Strong demonstrated desire to learn new skills and techniques.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with large (terabytes) databases.
  • Ability to assimilate and disseminate new software tools and programming techniques.
  • Desire to motivate and train colleagues on software tools, languages, and programming techniques.
  • Ability to bring a specific domain expertise to transplantation (i.e.: NLP, genomics, computer vision, and etc.).
  • Experience developing on cloud platforms (Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure).
  • Familiarity with version control, and CI/CD concepts.
  • Automated testing in ADO/GitHub or test-driven development.
  • Experience with API's and API development.
  • Rapid prototyping, hackathon, and/or front-end project experience a plus.

Education

4-year degree in data science, computer programming, data analytics, healthcare, or related field of study, or equivalent work experience. Master's degree preferred.
