Job Summary: The Buyer is responsible for procuring raw material, supplies and services necessary for the organizations operations. This role involves Material Requirement Planning (MRP) administration, sourcing material, negotiating prices, maintaining supplier relationships, and ensuring the timely and cost-effective delivery of products. The Buyer will work closely with other departments to support their needs and to ensure that purchasing activities support the companys financial goals.

Requires a candidate who is a self-starter, has a continuous improvement mindset, is a team player, and will work to take this position to the next level

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supplier Management:

o   Build and manage supplier relationships. Work closely with critical suppliers to track and improve: Supplier on Time Delivery, Lead-times, Price, and to optimize inventory levels.

o   Maintain supplier contact info and notes in MS Word document.

o   Maintain account information in portals for online suppliers.

2.Procurement Process:

o   Run MRP decision report as needed to determine and execute purchasing requirements. Send quotes and purchase orders to suppliers in time to support production start dates.

o   Purchase long lead items in advance of MRP process, on new Sales Orders, if needed.

o   Analyze reports to ensure that purchasing decisions are accurate and made at the best volume and price.

  • Track open purchase orders to ensure on time delivery of parts and to keep the purchase order queue in good order.
  1. Cost Management
  • Negotiate terms and pricing agreements with suppliers to achieve the best possible value.
  • Verify that material is issued to job orders at the appropriate cost when jobs are released to production. Run cost variance reports weekly to identify and fix any variance to standard cost
  • Support Engineering and Sales teams on quotes for material on new business.
  1. Inventory Management:
  • Work with inventory control and warehouse teams to keep stocking levels accurate and on target.
  • Support Inventory Control Department on accuracy of critical parts. Perform cycle counts on critical parts at time of purchase.
  • Manage the Plan for Every Part (PFEP) process to ensure the proper controls are in place to manage inventory performance at all levels.
  1. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain and keep information in MRP up to date: Supplier info, Lead times, Safety Stocks, Costs, Etc.
  • Run Material shortage reports weekly on open sales orders to ensure that all material is properly planned, at all stages of the planning process to meet production requirements.
  • Identify and expedite material shortages from sales order entry to completion of the product.
  • Maintain Purchase Order Log in MS Excel to track RFQs and POs, and to make sure that all purchasing activities are completed with accuracy and in time to support production.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field a plus
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience purchasing in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in the steel industry a plus.
  • Skills:
  • Negotiations. Communication.
  • ERP/MRP.  Intermediate Excel.
  • Independent. Organized. Attention to detail.
  • Decision making. Data analysis.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in an office setting and on the production floor.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs.
