Job Description / Essential Elements:

Principal - K- 6

Description of Position

The principal shall be held responsible for the general management and immediate educational direction and supervision of the school. As the administrator of the school, the principal shall be responsible for the enforcement of the State Education Code, the rules and regulations of the California State Board of Education, the policies and the administrative regulations of the Superintendent of Schools. The principal shall operate under the direction of the Superintendent.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains an instructional program. Directs the curriculum designed to meet the educational needs of the pupils and of the community. Works to improve the educational program and the use of instructional materials and procedures. Directs the development of educational plans for his/her school that are consistent with the District's long-term plans. Recommends changes in the course of study. Supervises instruction. Visits classrooms regularly.

Prepares school master programs and room schedules and makes staff assignments. Adjusts an official program where necessary for the proper organization of his/her particular school with the approval of the Superintendent, and assigns teachers in accordance with the policies governing the assignment of teachers. Transfers teachers within the elementary school to other grade levels, where necessary. Maintains school records and submits reports as required by the Superintendent, the Deputy Superintendent, an Assistant Superintendent, and the State Department of Education. Maintains pupil attendance records. Submits required statistical reports promptly on the day requested by the Superintendent or designee. Administers instructional supplies allotment. Submits certificated personnel evaluation reports as required by contract.

Maintains records of collection and distributions of funds in accordance with procedures established by District policy. Conducts appropriate public information programs for his/her school, follows the general policies of the school district, and cooperates with public service agencies such as police, fire, health, and welfare. Develops a comprehensive plan for prompt and effective control and care of the entire school personnel in case of fire or other emergency. Maintains adequate first aid services for his/her school. Provides for adequate safety instruction and drills and assigns members of the staff to assume specified responsibilities. Inspects the school of equipment affecting provisions for health and safety. Reports promptly in writing to the Superintendent, or designee, any danger of damage to property, any stolen property, or any failure of contractor to perform services.

Reports any injury or sudden illness of pupils, members of the staff or other employee or person wherein rights and obligations of the district may be involved within 24 hours of the injury or illness. Submits pupil accident reports to the Superintendent on the proper form in triplicate. Submits employee accident reports of industrial injury to the Superintendent in triplicate (Form 502: State Department of Industrial Relations). Reports immediately by telephone to the Superintendent any serious

Injury to any teacher, employee or student. Maintains a healthful environment within the school for both students and staff, following all local and state regulations in connection therewith. Maintains accurate records of attendance of himself/herself and teachers. Submits payrolls, sick leave requests, and other forms requested by the Superintendent, or designee.

Enforces the administrative and teaching calendar adopted by the Board of Education. Adheres to the regulations governing the service of the other employees of the school. Maintains regular office hours. Before leaving the premises, he/she shall satisfy him/herself that all pupils not in the charge of a teacher have left the building. Notifies the Superintendent when leaving for school business or of his/her absence due to illness. Provides for a teacher who has been approved by the Board of Trustees to serve in his/her absence and assumes full responsibility of the school office.

Directs the requisitioning and distribution of supplies and initiates the necessary requisitions for proper maintenance and repair to building and equipment. Notifies the Superintendent of any vacancy or anticipated vacancy in the teaching staff. He/she recommends to the Superintendent, or designee any personnel changes to be made in his/her school. Maintains and enforces the "Behavior and Discipline Code" adopted by the Board of Education and assumes responsibility for the discipline and morale of his/her school.
