**SUMMARY**:

- Assists the Judge and supervises all courtroom personnel. The Crier is responsible for the courtroom and must be able to prioritize all judicial needs in an efficient and competent manner, while maintaining security and order at all times.

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Chambers Responsibilities. Open Chambers by turning on lights, including lamps. Fill the Judge’s water glass. Check for filings and deliveries from the previous day. Make copies, obtain files and assist with any other clerical tasks as requested by the Judicial Assistant. In preparation for conferences in Chambers, greet and sign-in counsel and escort to Chambers. In the event the Judicial Assistant is out and coverage is unavailable, cover phones and open the mail. Confer with the Judicial Assistant for any other duties;
- Daily Courtroom Maintenance. The Crier is responsible for opening the Judge’s Robing Room, as well as the courtroom, and turning on all lights and lamps. Fill the Judge’s water glass as well as the counsel tables’ water pitchers. Make sure cups and tissues are stocked in the courtroom. Advise the Court Clerk when to order tissues and get sleeves of cups from Court Services. At the end of each day, clean the Judge’s glass/cups, counsel water glasses and water pitcher. Turn the Judge’s calendar to the next day and turn off all the lights in the Courtroom and Robing Room;
- Courtroom Management. The Crier is responsible for procuring all necessary files for that day. The Crier is responsible for placing cases in the order to be heard. Check in parties and counsel as they arrive. Ensures that the Court Clerk knows who is present. Contact Sheriff’s Department when deputies are needed (PFA, ICC, Gagnon, etc.) Contact the DA’s and PD’s offices to ensure attendance when needed. Communicate with Chambers to update/be updated on cases. Pages and/or calls missing parties. Ensures that the Judge has the names of all parties, litigants and those individuals assisting in the courtroom (Tipstaves, 2nd Seat Clerks, Deputies, etc.). The Crier coordinates conferences with counsel and the Judge in the Robing Room. The Crier ensures that the Courtroom staff and counsel are ready to begin when the Judge is ready to commence proceedings. The Crier makes announcement prior to start of Court regarding courtroom decorum (i.e.: turn off cell phones and electronic devices, take off hats, etc.) The Crier is responsible for introducing the Interpreter to the individual with limited English proficiency (LEP). If at any time the Judge leaves the bench, the Crier is to escort the Judge to the door, in and out (for recesses, when court resumes and at close of day);
- Courtroom Proceedings. The Crier opens Court, swears in witnesses, jurors and interpreters and makes necessary arrangements for sequestering juries. Brings sequestered witnesses from hallway when needed for testimony. The Crier maintains courtroom order during court proceedings (wake sleeping individuals, crying babies, hat removal, etc.). Hands copies of Exhibits from counsel to witness and from witness and/or counsel to Judge. In conjunction with the Court Clerk, the Crier may need to assist Court Clerk and Court Reporter with copying, overseeing Tipstaves and giving direction as to what is required for the day. Advises Court Services when courtroom matters break down and Tipstaves are not needed for the next day. Also advises Court Services when repairs or general housekeeping are necessary;
- Courtroom Security. The Crier ensures that all necessary security measures are taken by Deputies assigned to the Courtroom;
- Deliveries. Distribute Orders, files, faxes and/or any other documents to Prothonotary, Clerk of Courts, DRO, Probation, Bullpen, Court Administration, Court Services, DA, PD, chambers, courtroom, etc. as necessary. Check faxes (morning, lunch and end of day).
