About the Project: Much has changed in civic life since 2018, and the Annette Strauss Institute is looking for a researcher and writer who can lead a wholesale re-examination of the metrics for evaluating the civic health of the State of Texas. In addition to the report’s traditional focus on voter participation, volunteerism, and community connectedness, we intend to explore the following:
- The state of civics education in the K-12 education system;- Public trust in media, courts, elections, and other democratic institutions;- Political violence and threats of political violence;The Fellow will have the opportunity to assemble an advisory board of scholars and statewide civic leaders to guide and contribute to the report. The Fellow will work under the supervision of ASI Director Mark Strama, with academic mentorship from ASI founder Dr. Rod Hart.
The Fellow will also have opportunities to contribute to other areas of research interest to ASI, including alternative voting systems that can reduce political polarization.
Purpose
**Responsibilities**:
- Collaborate with ASI Director to build a Steering Committee of scholars and other experts as thought partners and validators in developing the metrics and methodologies that will guide this research.- Conduct research and write report for publication by the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life, including an executive summary, slides, and infographics designed for media and public awareness.- Present findings to audiences as needed to increase public awareness of the report.- Support ASI fundraising and grant writing efforts as needed.- Collaborate with ASI Director to identify additional avenues for research.- Supervise undergraduate research interns, and Graduate Research Assistants if applicable.- Other responsibilities as assigned by ASI Director.
Required Qualifications- Doctoral degree in communication studies, journalism, political science, public administration, economics, information science, or related fields within the last three years.- Strong record of research productivity.- Experience managing the development, implementation, analysis, and write-up of quantitative research.- Strong interest and involvement in civil society and democracy.- Strong statistical skills.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience convening and leading a complex, multi-faceted research effort with multiple stakeholders.- Experience with public presentations in a non-academic environment, including in front of media.
Salary Range
$65,000 + depending on qualifications
