**Schedule: Monday through Friday**
**6:30 am - 2:30 pm**

**NATURE OF WORK**:
This is entry-level manual labor involving on-the-job training to perform maintenance and repair on the pumping, and administrative equipment and facilities. Work involves participating in the maintenance and repair of the administrative building and equipment, and on other water/sewer facilities. Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. Safety equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, reflective vests, gloves and steel-toed shoes, SCBA and other protective equipment are worn.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** (Specific assignment may include some or all of the following):

- Assists Water/Sewer Mechanics by gathering tools and equipment, fabricating parts, setting up scaffolds and ladders.
- Perform daily cleaning and maintenance for the Administrative offices, picks up and deliver mail to Civic Center
- Sweeps walks, shovels snow, operates snow blower and spreads salt.
- Strips, waxes, mops and polishes floors.
- Washes walls and windows.
- Empties trash, cleans washrooms and replenishes custodial/janitorial supplies.
- Assists in the cleaning of sludge from the shore intake wells.
- Makes minor repairs to treatment plant buildings, replaces broken windows, tuckpoint brickwork, patch cement work, scrape and paint.
- Lubricates equipment, makes inspections and checks for proper operation.
- Performs minor maintenance of high lift and low lift pumps, motors, and engines.
- Opens and closes valves as directed.
- Receives and unloads deliveries and supplies.
- Picks up parts or supplies from vendors using City vehicles.
- May erect, repair and maintain fences and other small structures.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK**:

- Must possess a high school diploma, GED or higher and must possess three (3) or months of work experience handling tools or equipment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
- Must be willing and able to obtain a forklift operator's certification within 18 months of employment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
- Must be willing and able to undergo and pass annual medical surveillance to comply with OSHA respiratory requirements and remain compliant as a condition of employment.
- Must remain appropriately shaven in order to safely use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Must obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 Certification within 18 months of hire.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

- Some knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in water/sewer line repairs.
- Some knowledge of safety standards and precautions connected with maintenance activities.
- Ability to remain compliant with required certifications.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment associated with maintenance.
- Ability to operate small power tools, floor maintenance equipment, and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Ability to read and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to follow instructions and work cooperatively with others.

**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK**:
Ability to lift parts, climb in and out of trenches, sit or stand for extended periods of time in confined spaces.
Ability to detect and recognize odors; focus on small and/or distant objects.
Frequent exposure to dangerous equipment, loud noise levels, extreme temperatures, extreme weather conditions, vibrations, wetness, dirt and dust.
**SUPERVISION**:
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Water/Sewer Mechanic, or pumping supervisor. Work assignments are given daily and weekly, either verbally or in writing, with the employee responsible for completing the work according to City work rules and safety regulations. Work is reviewed through ongoing observation, written and verbal communications, meetings and feedback from the supervisor and from other department employees. Guidance is provided through rules and regulations, policies and procedures, Unified Work Rules, Union Contract, Personnel Rules and OSHA. Additional guidance is provided through the Illinois EPA. Work is evaluated at least annually for the safe and skilled operation of equipment, quality of tasks, adherence to work rules, and performance in accordance with classification standard.
