The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking an early career librarian for a one-year residency from September 2024 through August 2025. The Seiler Resident will report to the Associate Librarian for Collections Description and Imaging and be mentored by the Curator of Manuscripts. Throughout their residency, they will rotate through various teams within the Folger Collections department in addition to focusing on a special year-long project.
The 2024-2025 Seiler Resident will work at the intersection of digital humanities and librarianship to reimagine a digital asset that has recently moved to the Folger: the Catalogue of English Literary Manuscripts, 1450-1700- CELM consists of a catalogue of literary manuscripts by 237 early modern British authors, with descriptions of over 37,000 poetical, dramatic, and literary texts located across hundreds of private and public collections. It was developed by Dr. Peter Beal in the 1980s as a series of printed volumes and expanded by him between 2005 and 2013 to include more women and non-canonical writers. A decade later, it needs content updates and digital refurbishment. The goal is to increase its visibility, usability, and inter-operability with other relevant Folger digital assets, such as the Union First Line Index- ).
The Resident will gain valuable experience in digital humanities and project management as well as experience in reading English secretary script and researching and describing early modern English manuscripts and printed books. They will collaborate closely with catalogers to make relevant connections and updates to our catalog records, with our data architect to improve functionality and search in CELM, and with our crowd-sourcing transcription team to provide links to transcriptions of poetical miscellanies as they become available. They will provide documentation and establish workflows for maintaining and updating CELM. They will be at the forefront of new ways of thinking about collection description and discovery, through the development of interoperable resources and connections between Folger and non-Folger resources and institutions. They will have an opportunity to write blog posts for _The Collation_, the Folger’s collection blog, develop a pop-up exhibition, and present their work in a public talk at the end of the Residency.
