**Position Description**:
Chicago-based Adoption Center of Illinois (ACI) seeks a dynamic, energetic Director of Development to lead the organization’s fundraising efforts. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and plays a critical role in sustaining Adoption Center of Illinois as an organization that strives to fulfill its mission of Helping Children through Adoption.

The Director of Development will develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, and will be responsible for all fundraising events; while also cultivating new and existing donor relationships, and submitting grant proposals.

**Essential Functions & Responsibilities**:

- Manage the overall development program to meet annual goals
- Assist executive leadership in development of strategic fundraising plan
- Identify, cultivate, and sustain relationships with major donor prospects
- Research and identify prospective new donors and proactively initiate sponsorship and funding
- Prepare and submit grant proposals
- Take full ownership of fundraising initiatives, including annual gala; ticket sales, marketing, procuring auction items, and securing donations and sponsorships
- Supervise volunteer committees involved in event organization
- Work with Board Development Committee to ensure that the board has tools needed to be successful in their fundraising initiatives

**Qualifications**:
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred. Minimum 5 years nonprofit development experience, including event planning/execution.
- Experience identifying and upgrading major donor prospects.
- Commitment to collaborate with funders, donors, allies, staff, board members and volunteers to prioritize development and build organizational capacity.
- Ability to develop a long-term strategy, maximizing results through fundraising.
- Project and Time Management - Proven ability to be self-motivated and work independently and hold oneself accountable.
- Excellent project planning skills. Detail-oriented with a strong ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects.
- Event planning experience - Ability to plan and execute large annual Gala and several smaller family focused events.
- Communication - Excellent written communication skills; ability to compose, edit, and proofread materials. Strong verbal communication skills. Ability to interact with colleagues, and other external audiences in a pleasant and effective manner.
- Experience in media relations a plus.
- Technology - Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Constant Contact, implementation of CRM software.
- Understanding of adoption - Basic understanding through personal or professional experience with adoption a plus. Willingness to learn about adoption practices and programs.

**Requirements**:
Valid driver’s license, access to personal transportation.

Availability to work selected evenings and weekends as necessary.
