Responsibility Summary

The Director of Development (DOD) has principal responsibility for donor engagement and development, including cultivating/soliciting a portfolio of individual and corporate donors, and event sponsors. The Director creates and utilizes a data-driven donor relations strategy to maximize revenue for the organization. The Director also supports the marketing and communications process in coordination with the Chief Development & Marketing Officer (CDMO.)

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • In coordination with the CDMO, creates annual budget for annual fund and events, and creates periodic reports on progress toward goal.
  • Assists the CDMO and team members in the implementation of key departmental activities, including all fundraising and outreach activities and major communications efforts.
  • Partner with the Database Administrator to track fundraising income through Raiser’s Edge; provide the Database Administrator guidance on monthly data reconciliation.
  • Compile reports as needed for executive leadership and board committees.
  • Supports the implementation and day-to-day activities of the marketing and communications strategy.
  • Works closely with CDMO and Director of Institutional Giving to develop department goals, team building activities, and biannual retreat.
  • Successfully provides ongoing supervision and development of direct reports by meeting regularly, setting goals and expectations, and mentoring/teaching relevant skills.

Annual Fund

  • Identify, cultivate, and sustain relationships with major donor prospects.
  • Drives the growth of the corporate and events giving. Identify new corporate sponsors.
  • Manages and cultivates a portfolio of donors including individuals, corporations, and event sponsors.
  • Assess gaps in giving from individuals, corporations, event sponsors, and develop strategies to improve in those areas.
  • Recognize contributions with acknowledgment letters and special recognition events.

Fundraising Events

  • Facilitates the event planning process.
  • Research and identify prospective new sponsors and proactively initiate sponsorship and funding.
  • In collaboration with the CEO and CDMO, liaise with board members to support their fundraising efforts.

Discretion

The Director of Development has a high-level range of discretion and independent decision-making.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Director of Development has the following direct reports: Database Administrator, Events Coordinator and Marketing and Communications Specialist.

Supervisory staff are expected to participate either as a volunteer or paid attendee at organization fundraisers (including but not limited to: Luminary Award Dinner, Associate’s Board Event, A Night of Heroes, etc.) Supervisory staff are also expected to participate in ChicagoCAC sponsored client/staff/community events (including but not limited to: Child Abuse Prevention Month Activities, Back to School Backpack Drive, Kid’s Holiday Party, Spirit Squad Events, etc.) It is expected that our supervisory staff will participate in as many of these events as possible.

Relationships

The Director of Development works closely with the Chief Development and Marketing Officer and members of the Development and Marketing Team.

Qualifications

Minimum educational requirement of a bachelor’s degree, CFRE a plus. At least 10 years of experience in Development and Marketing, with at least 5 years in managing teams required. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasked environment, with a willingness to learn and adapt in an ever-changing environment. Must possess excellent management skills, professional written and verbal skills, including report writing and presentation and organizational skills.
