Maintenance Service Technician

Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager or higher, performs a wide variety of skilled repairs in the area of rough and finish carpentry, masonry, drywall installation, ceiling, floor and tile installation, lock installation and repairs, minor roof repairs, window replacements, wood and metal door installation repair as well as all other associated tasks that support the maintenance and upkeep of buildings, facilities and residences operated and/or owned by the District. Operates a variety of hand and powered tools such as saws, drills, sanders, etc. Reads and interprets blueprints and project specifications. Plans and troubleshoots work assignments and projects to determine equipment requirements. Obtains quotes from local retailers for needed construction material and retrieves and/or delivers materials to work sites. Operates vehicles and motorized equipment such as: forklift, bobcat, tractor, and street sweeper. Acts independently in the performance of assigned projects and provides daily upkeep of the job site and routine housekeeping. Makes recommendations to supervisor if additional personnel is needed for project completion. Lays out, installs and finishes new concrete slabs, sidewalks and other structures as required.** This is a full-time, Local 700 Union position.**

**Typical Duties**

Performs a wide variety of skilled repairs and custom fabrication in the area of carpentry, masonry, drywall installation, ceiling, floor and tile installation, lock installation and repairs, minor roof repairs, window replacements, wood and metal door installation repair as well as all other associated tasks that support the maintenance and upkeep of buildings, facilities and residences operated and/or owned by the District.

Builds or repairs walls, doorframes, frameworks, floors, cabinets, scaffolding, and other fixtures; fits and installs window frames, doors, door frames, insulation, door hardware, interior and exterior trim.

Assists with the structural design, planning, layout, and construction of office, residential, and exhibit spaces as required.

Assesses and recommends measures to improve building energy efficiency, using processes and materials that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient.

Lays out, installs, and finishes new concrete slabs, sidewalks and other structures as required.

Operates a variety of hand and powered tools such as saws, drills, sanders, etc. to cut, shape, and assemble wood, metal, drywall, and other materials to specified measurements.

Reads and interprets blueprints, project specifications, and other technical documents.

Plans and troubleshoots work assignments and projects to determine equipment and material requirements.

Maintains work log records manually or via Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Sources material and picks up and/or delivers materials to work sites.

Operates vehicles and motorized equipment such as forklifts, aerial lift, skid steer, tractor, and street sweeper.

Maintains work logs and records. Requisitions material parts and supplies as needed and according to job specifications.

Performs fencing repairs to wooden, vinyl and metal fencing.

Acts independently in the performance of assigned projects. Provides daily upkeep of the job site and routine housekeeping. Makes recommendations to supervisor, including whether additional personnel are needed for project completion.

**Minimum Qualifications**

Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or higher.

Must possess at least 5 years of full-time work experience in the operation and maintenance of construction tools and equipment.

Must possess a valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License.

**Preferred Qualifications**

Possession of at least 1 season of work experience with the Forest Preserves of Cook County; OR work experience with partners such as Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Greencorps Chicago, Friends of the Forest Preserves, Cook County, the City of Chicago, or the Chicago Park District.

**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics**

Skill in the use and operation of a variety of hand-powered tools and equipment used to repair, maintain construct, and renovate buildings, facilities and residences owned by the District.

Familiarity with eco-friendly construction materials and green building practices.

Proficient mathematical skills required for measuring and calculating dimensions, angles, and other measurements.

Understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation, finishing, and construction.

Capable of custom design and fabrication based on specifications for a variety of indoor and outdoor functional needs.

Skill in reading and following blueprints, job specifications, sketches and other types of instructions.

Thorough knowledge of the working properties of lumber, wood products and other construction materials.
