Chicago, United States Cook County Offices Under the President Full time

Under the direction of the Environmental Control Inspector, conducts preliminary and comprehensive environmental field inspections of commercial enterprises including asbestos abatement, demolition projects and other situations to ensure enforcement and compliance to the Environmental Control Ordinance of Cook County. Monitors the environment (i.e. air, water, noise, solid waste, and hazardous material) with regards to ordinance violation. Cites pollution violators and provides environmental information to the general public. Prepares detailed environmental inspection reports for administrative review and determination for subsequent course(s) of action. Assists with the training of new environmental control inspection personnel relative to the policies and procedures of the department.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree **is required**
- Three (3) years’ full-time professional work experience conducting building inspections or asbestos abatement oversight **is required**
- Valid driver's license and current proof of insurance** is required**
- **Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by either the World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS**

Ability to read and explain County, State and Federal laws legislating environmental protection regulations. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn new software. Knowledge of basic engineering principles and practices to analyze blueprints and specifications of industrial and commercial enterprises. Skill utilizing reference material to extract necessary formulas and information needed to calculate emission rates relevant to environmental pollution control. Skill operating various portable monitors and measurement devices with the ability to interpret instrument readings in regard to pollution control. Skill creating technical diagrams, drawings and hand sketches of industrial and commercial processes and/or related facility layouts. Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats with the general public respective to the mandates of County, State and Federal environmental protection laws. Ability to prepare detailed analytical written reports. This position requires various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to lifting, pulling, pushing, climbing, squatting and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight. This position requires moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.

**Physical Requirements**

Light Work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job/occupation is rated Light Work when it requires: (1) walking or standing to a significant degree; (2) sitting most of the time while pushing or pulling arm or leg controls; or (3) working at a production rate pace while constantly pushing or pulling materials even though the weight of the materials is negligible.
