Department Summary: The Department of Political Science serves as one of the largest departments in Social Sciences, and had over 2200 undergraduates and 120 graduate students. Faculty members are about 45, with several having split positions in other departments or centers, and 10-12 lecturers per year. There are 11 full time staff, and about 10 students working in the department supporting administrative endeavors. Position Summary:
The Department of Political Science serves as one of the largest departments in Social Sciences, and had over 2200 undergraduates and 120 graduate students. There are 11 full time staff, and about 10 students working in the department supporting administrative endeavors. The Personnel Manager is responsible for academic and staff personnel and benefits for the UCLA Political Science Department. Provides employment, personnel service and human resource assistance to 45 faculty, 12 temporary faculty, various summer sessions faculty, Emeriti, visiting scholars; and oversee a Personnel Coordinator that is responsible for 45 academic apprentice personnel (teaching assistants, research assistants, readers, and fellows), lecturers and student staff. The Academic, apprentice and staff personnel budget totals more than $10M annually. Reports to the Chief Administrative Officer. Staff the Departmental Merit Review Committee for faculty advancement and promotion and is responsible for assembling and preparing faculty dossiers for departmental and College review. Works closely with the College of Letters and Science and Campus Human Resources relative to employment of represented and non-represented staff personnel. Responsible for advising and counseling all employees about University benefits and on-line benefits services through UCPath. This is a highly visible position that requires sensitivity, knowledge of University personnel policies and procedures and the UCPath system, organizational and supervisorial skills to create, adjust and maintain the department's personnel services system.

- Detailed knowledge of current academic personnel policies and procedures, affirmative action requirements, benefits programs, visa requirements and working knowledge of the UCLA Call and academic personnel manual. (preferred)
- Recent demonstrated ability to perform and coordinate necessary personnel actions by determining the time and sequence of events to be taken in accord with established academic personnel policies. (required)
- Skill in compiling and analyzing information, practices, or procedures to define problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors, formulate logical and objective conclusions and recognize alternatives and their implications. (required)
- Thorough knowledge of systemwide and organization policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration. (preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and diplomacy; perform detailed work; and independently prioritize and organize work. (required)
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and/or with short time lines for completion of projects. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work reflecting understanding of relative importance of competing assignments in a large and complex environment. (required)
- Ability to train, assign work, review and supervise staff. (required)
- Skill in communicating (verbally, electronically, written) to convey accurate and timely information to individuals at various organizational levels. (required)
- Working knowledge of university payroll policies and procedures, including UCPath, TRS, and other on-line systems. (preferred)
- Ability to analyze complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel. (required)
- Demonstrated ability to develop professional and effective working relations with staff, faculty and administration. Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility. (required)
- Familiarity with college administrative Structures; familiarity with staff (career/casual/ student employee) personnel policies; familiarity with UCPath benefits selection. (preferred)
