**SUBSTITUTE - INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE (ON-CALL, AS-NEEDED)**

Definition
Under the supervision of a certificated person, the Paraprofessional Aide performs a variety of instructional and routine clerical duties in the classroom and works directly with students as directed by the teacher.

Essential Duties
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that might be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
- Assists the teacher with reading groups, the presentation of learning materials, spelling and other educational tests.
- Oversees and supervises students during classroom activities, during play, physical education periods and on the playground.
- May assist in supervision during field trips.
- May score papers, record grades and verify reasons for absences.
- Keeps records and records observations/information to the teacher about students’ behavior.
- May assist in identifying learning needs of children.
- Distributes and collects papers and supplies.
- Assists in the preparation of bulletin boards and keeping learning areas such as desks, sinks and countertops clean.
- May operate copy machines and do some typing of educational materials.
- May work with students in the learning of specialized reading programs and in computer instruction.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE OF:

- Basic methods used in controlling and motivating children.
- Psychology used in the care and handling of children.
- Record keeping, basic arithmetic and the general goals and purposes of public school.
- Grammar, oral and writing skills.

ABILITY TO:

- Learn methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional environment.
- Work independently and to follow oral and written directions.
- Communicate effectively with children, parents and staff.
- Supervise children.

**Education and Experience**:
Graduation from high school or equivalent. In addition, meet one of the following requirements under the
No Child Left Behind criteria:
**-Complete two years of college courses, or**
**-Provide proof of having passed a district NCLB proficiency test**
**-Possess an A.A. or B.A. degree.**

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to consistently sit for periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use of hands and fingers to touch, feel or operate standard office equipment including technology, and reach with hands and arms; walking level surface, stand, bend and stoop; lifting objects
1-25 pounds; carry/push 1-25 pounds; specific vision abilities required include close vision to read and enter data into a computer; ability to distinguish sounds in transmission, speaking.

Stress of deadlines, stress of interpersonal conflict, normal work standards stress, ability to work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, reading, interpreting codes, laws, policy, calculate, perform routine math processes, memorize and recall objects, people, analyze problems and generate alternatives, reconcile apparent ambiguities, solve multi-variant problems.

License Requirement:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.

Work Year: 10 Months (day to day assignments)

**Salary**: $18.06 per hour
