Description

Under general supervision of the Behavior Specialist/Psychologist perform a variety of functions/activities pertaining to the healthcare, instruction and training of students; perform a variety of routine clerical and supporting activities for instructional and therapy personnel; collect data and provide input for the development of Positive Behavior Interventions; provide intensive behavior intervention services and implement behavior support plans; record student progress and provide input to instructional personnel; assist with training of instructional assistants and educational staff on behavioral strategies; do other related work as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that might be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

* May assist instructional and therapy personnel with planning and organization of therapy activities with children experiencing various physical, learning and/or behavioral problems
* Work with individual students to reinforce and follow up learning activities
* Monitor and assist children in a variety of self help activities, including self regulation, feeding, toileting, etc
* Direct children into safe play activities and assist them with appropriate social behaviors
* Assist in managing behavior of children through the use of a variety of reinforcement techniques
* Collect data, record progress, and provide input to instructional staff related to student behavior; assist in development of communication skills
* Lift and move students who are unable to provide assistance
* Use methods, techniques and procedures for ensuring the safety of students
* Perform routine first aid functions
* May ride the bus with children
* Assist with the training of instructional assistants and educational staff
* Other related work as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

* Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics of severely handicapped children
* Behavior management, strategies and techniques and a variety of reinforcement methods and strategies
* Basic first aid and emergency treatment procedures
* Basic arithmetical concepts
* Routine record management, storage and retrieval procedures

Ability to:

* Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward severely handicapped children
* Appropriately manage student behavior and guide severely handicapped children toward more acceptable social behaviors
* Communicate effectively in oral and written form and utilize manual communication as required by the assignment
* Perform routine clerical skills and operate a variety of educationally related machines and equipment
* Collect and record data
* Learn to utilize a variety of instructional materials, procedures and strategies to enhance the training and educational environment for children
* Understand and carry out oral and written directions
* Demonstrate the positive use of behavioral interventions to others
* Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
* Use new equipment and technology as it becomes required to perform this job
* Ride bus that transports handicapped children
