- THE AGENCY
- The Department of City Planning (DCP) plans for the strategic growth and development of the City through ground-up planning with communities, the development of land use policies and zoning regulations applicable citywide and by sharing its perspectives on growth and community needs with sister agencies in collaboration with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).- THE DIVISION
- The Brooklyn Office is made up of a team of city planners and urban designers who work on a wide variety of studies, rezoning’s, and developments, across a large and diverse borough. The Brooklyn Office coordinates the review of numerous private and publicly sponsored requests for land use and zoning changes and manages the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), including presentations to the City Planning Commission and coordination with Community Boards. Brooklyn Office staff also work on a wide range of land use, zoning, urban design, and transportation issues in communities across the borough, and staff are the local experts on their communities, providing essential knowledge to policy makers, and appointed and elected officials. The Brooklyn Office offers a dynamic work environment, with exposure to and influence on the development of neighborhood plans, and provides planning expertise to the Department’s Executive Staff, City Planning Commission (CPC), elected officials, Community Boards other City Agencies, and the public-at-large.
- THE ROLE
- The Brooklyn Office is seeking a Climate and Sustainability Planner to help prepare the city for a changing climate, advance grant studies related to stormwater and flood resiliency, and support land use planning and policy studies and their related outreach and engagement processes. Under supervision, with some latitude for exercising independent judgment, the planner will:

- Help develop neighborhood
- and borough-wide stormwater resiliency and planning grant studies, with a particular focus on South Williamsburg and Coney Island;- Advise the Brooklyn Office, Executive Staff, and the City Planning Commission on issues of climate, sustainability, resiliency, and stormwater management;
- Coordination with local, state, and federal agencies, with particular focus on NYS DEC, NYC DEP, DDC, DOT, OEM, and other capital agencies, and the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice;
- Engagement with neighborhood, borough, and citywide community, advocacy, and non-profit organizations centered on resiliency, sustainability, and emergency preparedness;
- Represent DCP at meetings of civic, business, and community groups, community boards, elected officials, and public agencies, and help organize and lead discussions at public meetings;
- Develop technical documents and presentation materials including reports, maps, graphics, memos, and other forms of correspondence;
- Support neighborhood, borough, and citywide plans to address the challenges the city faces, including OneNYC, the ten-year Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, the Coastal Zone Management program, and other sustainability plans;
- Develop a working knowledge of waterfront and stormwater planning and policies, including city-led land use and zoning studies, and community-led initiatives within the floodplain;
- Research topics related to stormwater and flood resiliency, climate change, sustainability, and best practices in infrastructure design and planning; and
- Develop our understanding of emerging topics in climate, stormwater management, flood resiliency, sustainability, and waterfront planning.Minimum Qualifications1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
