**Early Childhood Principal**
The Early Childhood Education Principal assists in the development of the early childhood vision, facilitates the learning needs of all students, provides effective instructional leadership and is accountable for the school’s operation. Major responsibilities include the educational program, management of professional and non-licensed staff, student development, facility maintenance and management, fiscal management activities, and developing effective community relations.
**Reporting**: This Position reports to the Superintendent
**Qualifications**:
- Current MA DESE Pre-K/K Principal License.
- Master's Degree
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as an early childhood education teacher
- Effective leadership skills and experiences
- Proven background in instruction, assessment, and professional development
**Essential Functions**:
- Monitors the implementation of the curriculum and serves as the instructional leader for program staff
- Assists in the identification of the needs of children and families and helps to develop strategies to prepare students for Elementary School
- Communicates with parents, staff, other DPS administrators and community members to establish and maintain professional relationships
- Assists in the development and implementation of professional development activities for all early childhood staff
- Assists in the selection, support, and evaluation of assigned personnel to attain the objectives of the early childhood program
- Utilizes a variety of data sources to assist in decisions for enhancing student, staff, and/or program performance
- Assists in the annual budget development and administration
- Practices ethical standards to resolve issues and promote a climate of collaboration and collegiality
- Works collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning and the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services to ensure quality early care and education for all children
- Performs other tasks and assumes responsibilities required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment
Equity
- Serves as an advocate for equal access to education and equal opportunities in education for all children
- Applies and adapts school or state guidelines to meet needs of a diverse student population in compliance with federal and state law, state regulations, and school committee policy, as applicable
- Promotes respect for all members of the school community. Fosters a school climate that addresses the individual needs of students in a diverse society
- Recognizes and addresses bias in teaching materials, assessment instruments, school practices, and school organization. Works to eliminate bias
- Works closely with the Deputy Superintendent of Student Services and the Director of Special Education in ensuring that appropriate instruction and services are provided for students with special needs
Professional Development
- Coordinates effective professional development programs with staff members focusing on the vision and goals of the school and consistent with district staff development goals and objectives
- Works closely with the Deputy Superintendent of Teaching & Learning in ensuring that school goals and professional development practices dovetail with and reinforce district goals
- Models ongoing professional development through personal scholarship, reflective practices, and serving as a teacher of teachers
- Applies knowledge of adult learning to effective staff development programs and in-service education
- Provides resources and opportunities to enhance staff performance
- Administers services and programs which acknowledge the diverse needs of bothseasoned educators and new teachers
- Develops a personal plan for professional development based upon self-reflection and external evaluation
**Other Responsibilities**:
Inform appropriate central office personnel of problems, progress, and plans in the building as they occur
- Support and participate in parent/community activities.
- Provide an orientation program for new staff members.
- Participate in developing building goals according to the educational goals of the district.
- Other duties as assigned by the superintendent
