**JOB DESCRIPTION**
**POSITION**: Science Specialist
**SALARY PLACEMENT**: $29.10 - $30.87 per hour

**Comments and Other Information**:
The assignment is for an elementary science specialist to support the classroom teachers in
providing a science program for pupils in grades kindergarten through fifth, and assist other
school programs as assigned. Applicants will only be contacted if invited for an interview.

**Summary of Position**:
Under the immediate direction of the Executive Director, is responsible for collaborating with
school personnel to support the classroom teachers in providing an instructional science
program to integrate the sciences into the core curriculum and to perform other duties directly
related to this position description.
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities **_(include but are not limited to the following):_**
- Strive toward implementing the MATES mission and vision;
- Collaborate with the classroom teachers to integrate hands-on science lab activities into
the core curriculum through science experiments, engineering challenges, and
cooperative inquiries integrated into grade level thematic units to solidify the classroom
content;
- Commitment to current knowledge of all State Standards relevant to science.
- Practice exemplary instructional methods with skills in classroom management;
- Introduce young children to the world of science and inspire them to develop their
- curiosity in experiments or hands-on inquiries by making them interesting and fun;- Must have enthusiasm, a high energy level, and a passion for science;
- Possess excellent communication ability along with understanding and patience;
- Ability to adapt to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, and to
- accommodate a variety of instructional activities;- Instruct students in proper care and use of science lab tools and equipment

Work predominantly in a classroom and school environment. Temperature - normal climate
may experience short intervals of extreme weather. Daily contacts with students, teachers, and
school staff. Regular/occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency
personnel.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work environment includes
working directly with children. There are a number of activities and situations happening at
once, and the employee must ensure that children are supervised at all times, and that children
are involved in safe and appropriate activities. The employee must be prepared to handle
accidents and emergencies at any time.
The job entails potential for exposure to adverse weather conditions; exposure to blood-borne
pathogens and communicable diseases; and for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly
individuals.

Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations. Ability to

vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and
depth perception. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel
objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Ability to bend and twist, stand,
walk, sit, stoop, kneel, run and crawl. Ability to reach in all directions. Ability to lift up to 25
pounds and carry up to 25 pounds. Moderate to high stress level.
