**Duties & Responsibilities**

**Field work**:
Camping or primitive lodging required for approximately 2 weeks per month while traveling to bat capture, acoustic monitoring, and vegetation monitoring sites across southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Frequency and duration of field work dependent on local weather conditions.
- 1. Principle Responsibilities:
- Sets up and performs a variety of lab or field tests and operations.
- Records results, makes observations, analyzes data, and interprets test results.

2. Non-invasive Monitoring Duties:
- Monthly 1 hour+ hikes uphill over rough terrain to a cave where bats roost, involving rappelling into the cave entrance for fecal sample collection and data download.
- Data download and maintenance of acoustic monitors and trail cameras at various sites.

3. Bat Capture Duties:
- Monthly overnight stays at roost sites in remote wilderness areas for mist netting surveys, with subsequent data collection and adherence to white-nose syndrome (WNS) decontamination and COVID-19 protocols.

i. The field team will overnight at the roost site mist netting for bats and sleeping under the stars for a few hours and then net again before sunrise; we will hike down in the morning.- Travel (2+ hour drives) to residential sites and protected areas for netting at hummingbird feeders, with gear organization and safe bat handling.

i. On these nights we will either camp locally or receive accommodations from our host.
- 4. Vegetation Survey Duties:
- Occasional phenology and density surveys for flowering agave plants that are accessed by driving primitive roads and hiking off trail through wilderness areas. Involving flowering phenology and density data collection and the use of a Garmin GPS, range finder, and compass.

**Lab work**:

- Conducted at University of Arizona campus when not in the field.
- 1. Principle Responsibilities:
- Operates, maintains and troubleshoots scientific apparatuses, equipment and instruments.
- Provide basic instruction to others on the use of this equipment. Collects and compiles research data. Completes basic calculations of test results.

2. Data Cleaning and Processing:
- Manages data entry, conducts emergence and return counts of bat roosts via thermal camera imagery, processes trail camera imagery, and labels, processes, and stores biological samples.
- Manages receipts and expenses associated with field work travel.

**Gear Maintenance**:

- Conducted in the field and at the University of Arizona.
- 1. Principle Responsibilities:
- Cleans, sterilizes, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs research equipment.
- Oversees gear organization for mist netting and field work, adhering to white-nose syndrome (WNS) decontamination protocols.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**:

- Familiarity and use of Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word and Excel), ArcGIS, R, and/or Garmin BaseCamp.
- Ability to navigate using GPS and topographic maps.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
- Three years of relevant field experience; OR,
- Equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University **Fleet Safety Policy**. As well, be willing to learn how to drive a large truck & UTV on two track roads.
- Must be willing to complete the pre-exposure series of rabies vaccinations and receive the COVID-19 vaccine and associated boosters.
- Willingness to follow necessary COVID-19 protocols to ensure the health and safety of the research team and to prevent possible transmission of COVID-19 to North American bat populations.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Previous experience with mist netting, handling bats and/or birds, and PIT tagging.
- Experience with conducting vegetation surveys.
- Previous experience driving a 4x4 truck and/or UTV.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife biology or related fields.
