**JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY**

Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing, leading and overseeing semi-skilled and skilled level field operations staff responsible for the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of the Town’s traffic signal system.
**DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS**

This is a lead level traffic signal classification in the maintenance and operations job familythat requires advance technical knowledge and skill in the technical/functional aspect of assigned traffic signal and lighting maintenance role. Work involves planning and coordinating work assignments, modifying established guidelines to improve processes, and providing advanced planning, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and problem solving.

**Examples of Duties**:
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES**:

- The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs._
- Leads staff; schedules staff and approves time off, assigns and tracks work orders to staff, provides communication from upper-level supervisor and management to work unit; directs, delegates and monitors workflow, equipment and materials; inspects work and develops staff for efficient operation; provides input into key personnel actions including performance evaluations, hiring, discipline, promotion, demotion.
- Operates and maintains specialized and/or moderate equipment including doing pre-and post-trip inspections.
- Responds to emergency situations during regular work hours and when on call; determine what equipment and personnel are needed to handle emergency situation.
- Provides oral and/or written reports regarding work activity, work completed, accidents and safety issues.
- Maintains safe work conditions and procedures; ensures the use of safe procedures and equipment by work unit.
- Prepares detailed work orders for each maintenance task which specifies the nature of the job, necessary tools, and expected duration.
- Reads and understands related maintenance contracts to ensure obligations are met from both the contractor and organization.
- Coordinates scheduling for contractual maintenance.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electronic traffic signal control devices, systems and related equipment, including communication lines, utility connections, video systems, railroad, and emergency vehicle pre-emption; performs the more difficult and/or complex tasks in assigned area.
- Programs traffic signal controllers.
- Participates in the construction, installation, and maintenance of traffic signals, electronic traffic control devices and street lighting systems.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance checks at signalized intersections including testing equipment in the signal control cabinet for proper operation and time setting; tests and records voltage and current usage; checks field equipment for proper head alignment, pole plumbness, missing material or visible damage.
- Participates in the operations of a personal computer based, networked traffic signal coordination system.
- Monitor inventory and order parts.
- Coordinates new installations with appropriate utilities; ensures proper location of utilities and other work hazards prior to digging.
- Reviews electrical and construction plans for traffic signals and street lights; inspects all phases of construction; interprets plans and work orders to determine and confirm proper placement of traffic signals and street lights.
- Assists with the organization and scheduling of projects pertaining to traffic control and other traffic signal problems.
- Performs inspections on construction of traffic signals and highway striping and signing at traffic signals.
- Maintains records of maintenance and construction reports of traffic signals.
- Prepares reports and maintains time, material, and equipment used records; requisitions supplies and materials.
- Performs related work as assigned.

**Typical Qualifications**:
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** (at job entry)

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED; 4 years of related experience in traffic signal maintenance or operations, engineering, construction, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

**LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS**
- Driver's License;
- Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.
