**Definition**:
Supervisory and highly technical work in assisting in the coordination and oversight of the efficient operations of the municipal wastewater treatment plant(s) and pumping stations; all other related work as required.

**Supervision**:
Works under the general direction of the Water Pollution Control Superintendent.

Performs work functions of a diverse nature requiring the ability to solve problems but with guidance by the Superintendent.

May supervise the performance of approximately thirteen or fewer full-time employees.

**Job Environment**:
Operates computers, other office equipment, facility machinery, and laboratory equipment as required.

Makes frequent contact with others, including but not limited to municipal departments, town, state and federal officials, the general public, the EPA, DEP, engineering firms, vendors and commercial users.

Has access to confidential division and departmental information.

Work is performed under shop and field conditions with some exposure to hazardous chemicals, oils, solvents, explosive and toxic conditions, and electrical hazards, as well as occasional exposure to variable weather conditions.

Operates all plant machinery and equipment (may operate grit removal mechanisms, primary and secondary clarifier mechanisms, aeration equipment, chlorination equipment, pumps, thickeners, standby generators, compressors, and plant utilities), as well as laboratory and testing equipment; operates sewage plant vehicles.

Errors could result in lower standards of service, personal injury, danger to public health, environmental pollution, time and monetary loss, and have legal repercussions.

Must accept on-call status and be available to respond to on-call circumstances.

**Essential Functions**:
Participates in the daily operation of the treatment plant and the sewage pumping stations; assists the superintendent in monitoring and controlling the plant’s wastewater treatment process.

Analyzes and evaluates operation, laboratory, and maintenance functions and records; applies appropriate corrective measures to mitigate potential problems

and restore proper operating standards and methods to mechanical and biological processes.

Prepares necessary reports for review by supervisors; assists in the preparation of budgets when requested; submits recommendations of plant needs as required by the Superintendent.

Recommends staff requirements to Water Pollution Control Superintendent; supervises, instructs, and trains personnel, as requested; may recommend disciplinary action to Superintendent.

Requisitions chemicals, parts, tools, and fittings required for plant operation and maintenance; maintains inventory of supplies.

Performs laboratory tests; samples influent and effluent for pH, solids, temperature, and other levels; performs additional tests as required; monitors computer readings to ensure efficient plant operation; performs other various processes in the treatment system and analyzes results.

Conducts plant inspections to determine efficiency, safety, and cleanliness; determines appropriate remedial actions in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

In the absence of the Water Pollution Control Superintendent, has direct responsibility for the overall administration, operation and maintenance of the Water Pollution Control facility.

Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.

**Recommended Minimum Qualifications**:
**Education and Experience**:
Associate degree in management, engineering, environmental science or a related field; Bachelor’s Degree in civil or environmental engineering desirable; four years’ experience with similar responsibilities in municipal wastewater and sewer collection operations; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Knowledge, Ability and Skill**:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and operating procedures of wastewater treatment and sanitary sewer systems. Working knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques of wastewater treatment, and state and federal pollution control regulations.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

**The following Certifications and/or Licenses are required**:
Massachusetts Grade VI Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification

Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License

**Physical and Mental Requirements**

Light physical effort generally required; occasional moderate exertion necessary. Must be able to access all areas of a multilevel facility. Good close, distant, color and peripheral vision, and depth perception necessary. Work requires frequent standing, walking, and climbing, and potentially strenuous work positions in the event of equipment failure.

Pay: $71,665.47 - $93,165.11 per year
