- Under supervision, performs a variety of duties involved in the operation, construction, maintenance and repair of both overhead and underground electric power distribution systems. The majority of line work is underground. Requires use of precautionary work methods and safety equipment due to electrical hazards present when working on or near energized conductors and electrical equipment.

**Job Description Summary**:

- EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Duties performed will vary based on apprentice skill and level):
1. Performs various duties of an apprentice, up to the duties of a four-year Apprentice Line Technician (when applicable), including:
2. Practices proper safety precautions for performing electric power distribution work.
3. Recognizes equipment and materials used in electric distribution.
4. Understands electricity basics, codes, and standards.
5. Performs grounds-person duties such as:
a. Assembles distribution hardware.
b. Lays underground cable.
c. Cleans worksite.
d. Provides maintenance and minor repair to vehicles and equipment.
e. Keeps shop clean, tools and equipment organized.
6. Performs tree trimming duties, such as:
a. Trims and removes trees.
b. Maximizes clearance of electric lines.
7. Installs and removes meters.
8. Installs, replaces, and repairs secondary and service conductors.
9. Uses backhoes and excavators to dig trenches and set equipment boxes.
10. Terminates 200 amp and 600 amp underground elbows, splices, and associated parts.
11. Sets and installs overhead and pad-mounted transformers.
12. Performs switching and sectionalizing.
13. Strings new wire and transfers old wire to new poles.
14. Works on all energized equipment up to 25 KV.
15. Operates a variety of equipment, vehicles and tools near and around electrical distribution lines and operates hot line tools to connect and disconnect system lines and components.
16. Installs and sets poles, pole hardware and such auxiliary equipment as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools.
17. Installs, replaces, and maintains streetlights.
18. Determines and locates cause of current interruptions.
19. Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment, performance, quality, and efficiency.
20. Tests power lines and auxiliary equipment to identify defective voltage regulators, transformers, switches, and related accessories causing line disturbances, such as voltage fluctuations, using direct reading and recording electrical testing instruments.
21. Performs all underground tasks which is most of line-work. Must be able to climbs poles to repair or replace overhead conductors, switches, transformers, fuses, and related equipment when needed, using precautionary work methods and insulated tools, ladders, and platforms when working on or near energized circuits.
22. May respond to fire alarms to disconnect power from buildings and extinguish fires on power poles or other utility property.
23. Follows work order and accounting procedures as necessary.
24. Works in accordance with applicable codes rules and safety manuals.
25. Makes decisions in the field as required.
26. Maintains daily time reports. Also maintains materials reports when requested by Line Crew Supervisors.
27. Under the direction of Electric Supervisor, conducts load and voltage surveys and related electrical repair work.
28. Performs a portion of the maintenance and operation of substation equipment energized 600 volts or less.
29. Operates utility’s SCADA system when necessary.
30. Operates equipment, including but not limited to:
a. Backhoe with Breaker
b. Digger Truck
c. Line/Bucket Truck
d. Forklift
e. Chainsaw
f. Air Hammer
g. Dump Trucks
h. Vac Truck
i. Trencher
j. Wood Chipper
31. Performs weekday after hours and weekend stand-by duty on rotational basis. Available for occasional overtime and after-hours calls.
32. Maximizes own work output and work quality, and that of others when crews are assigned.
33. Presents a positive image of the utility. Provides exceptional customer service to customers and builds effective working relationships w/City personnel.
34. Receives and responds to customer inquiries and complaints and performs corrective action in response to customer inquiries and complaints upholding our high level of customer service.
35. Interacts with customers regarding temporary power outages, tree trimming operations, and possible damage.
36. Reads and understands system maps, and if corrections are needed, report this to supervisor or superintendent.
37. Obtains a working knowledge of the electric meter system.
38. Reports all safety violations, or concerns in a timely manner.
39. Assists other Utility and City Departments when requested and needed.
