Research Assistant, Center for Sickle Cell Disease - Position Overview:_
The Center for Sickle Cell Disease is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Research Assistant to assist with administrative and research related support, thus improving the capacity for SCD related research.

The main responsibilities are to support data entry, data collection, sample collection for sickle cell disease (SCD) trait screening, and administrative tasks for ongoing Center for Sickle Cell Disease research projects.

The Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease is committed to a six-fold goal that includes comprehensive medical care, research, testing, education, counseling, and community outreach. Clinical care is held each Monday and Wednesday from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM respectively.

Join the Center for Sickle Cell Disease’s research team as a Research Assistant, responsible for supporting research efforts to understand the impact of sickle cell disease in the Washington DC area. The goal of the Center’s research is to understand the health disparities, socio-economic factors, and financial implications of sickle cell disease.

The Center for Sickle Cell Disease conducts research to inform policy, financial decisions at Howard University Hospital, and clinical outcomes to inform best practices for patients living with sickle cell disease. The current focus of the team is to improve the Center’s capacity to provide early-detection SCD Trait Screening and subsequent referrals to genetic counseling.

The Research Assistant will support the team and lead tasks such as writing research protocols, facilitating IRB review for research projects, collecting and analyzing data, draft manuscripts, and assisting with submitting for peer-review.
- Typical Duties_
- _ Sickle Cell Disease Trait Screening Sample Collection:_
- Lead the sample collection effort for sickle cell disease trait screening at community health fairs, Howard University Hospital, and other ad-hoc screening events.
- Safely store collected samples in the Center for Sickle Cell Disease laboratory space.
- Prepare notification letters for trait screening results to participants.
- Assist with consenting participants as well as preparing notification documentation.
- Analyze data collected from trait screening events for reporting purposes.
- _ Development of Research Procedures and Forms:_
- Assist in creating and updating research procedures and data collection forms for standardized data collection.
- _ Event and Project Assistance:_
- Support the coordination of virtual and in-person events and projects related to sickle cell research.
- Attend community health fairs to collect samples for sickle cell disease trait screening.
- _ Quality Assurance:_
- Conduct quality assurance checks on data collection and entry to uphold data accuracy and integrity.
- _ Participation in Virtual Meetings:_
- Attend weekly virtual team meetings to discuss project progress and collaborate with team members.
- _ Reporting:_
- Prepare and distribute weekly recruitment progress reports to project leaders.
- _ On-Site Clinic Review:_
- Spend one day weekly in the Sickle Cell clinic to review study data for accuracy and retrieve missing information.
- _ Document Drafting:_
- Assist in drafting letters, data collection forms, and other research-related documents as required.
- Desired Qualifications:_

The Center for Sickle Cell Disease is seeking a Howard University undergraduate student, regardless of year. Preferred qualifications include students interested in pursuing medical school, or another health profession. This might include students pursuing degrees in biology, psychology, chemistry, or other majors related to the health professions.
