Ocient is a hyperscale data solutions company headquartered in Chicago, IL, enabling organizations to analyze trillions to quadrillions of data records in seconds. Over the past five years, Ocient has built a SQL compliant data warehouse for Petabyte and beyond datasets that is 10x to 50x times faster than competitive OLAP databases.

**Position Overview**
Ocient is searching for an experienced Database Architect with strong problem-solving skills and a passion for coding. You will be working with industry-leading software architects to help implement and test a cutting-edge data warehouse.

**Responsibilities**
- Works across the entire codebase for both features and defects
- Written code serves as example for others and exemplifies coding standards, best practices and patterns
- 80% of time spent as a direct contributor writing/reviewing software, executing tests, debugging, prototyping etc.
- 20% of time reviewing designs, executing technical talks, architecting solutions etc.
- Called in as an expert to advise design work across the entire system
- Works on the architecture of the codebase more than individual code and features
- A design leader in the organization. Successfully designs subsystems or larger components with multiple integration points into existing infrastructure
- Open to feedback from others from all levels of the organization and can effectively weigh the tradeoffs of complex design decisions
- Takes responsibility for bringing tasks to completion and meeting schedules
- Actively improves efficiency of engineering by implementation of industry best practices.
- Keeps up to date with emerging technologies and research in relevant fields to help inform engineering and design decisions
- Cognizant of company culture and values and uses this knowledge to effectively participate with team members.
- Actively works to improve the culture and communication within the entire engineering organization.
- Presents architectural overviews of major components of the system to the broader team

**Qualifications**:

- BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or related technical field
- 10+ years of industry experience writing code to solve complex problems using an object-oriented programming language (e.g. C++, Java)
- Working at least 5 years at a Database software company as one of the lead architects designing, coding and refining their software and architecture.
- Query Optimization, Execution Engine or I/O experience ideal
- Experience with database architecture or implementation
- Familiarity with CPU architecture and assembly code
- Demonstrated coding experience on core technology
- Must be willing to jump in where needed, this role will require a hands-on attitude
- Ability to speak and write in English fluently

**Ideal Experience**:

- Experience architecting high performance, distributed systems
- Ability to own and manage all risk associated with large complex problems
- Strong technical leadership and communication skills
