This attorney will support the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as it fulfills its responsibilities for the Water Storage Investment Program, established through the voters' passage of Proposition 1 in 2014. The attorney will work on unique legal issues related to ensuring public benefits to fish and wildlife are realized through public funding of water storage projects.

This position involves legal research, analysis, and support of dedicated staff within CDFW for this program, and close work with other state agencies such as the California Water Commission, State Water Resources Control Board, Department of Water Resources. This attorney's duties include the development of unique contracts with project proponents to secure public benefits, and project-related permitting and review. This attorney's work will also include legal research, analysis, and support for related issues including the California Endangered Species Act, California Environmental Quality Act, other provisions of the Fish and Game Code, California water rights and water quality law, and the Public Trust Doctrine.

This attorney will work under the supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel and within a collaborative team of water and aquatic species-focused attorneys.

Working Conditions

Maintain normal and consistent work hours, averaging 40 hours per week. Position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule depending on operational needs. Work in excess of 40 hours per week is expected, when necessary, to complete assignments in a timely manner. Travel to all parts of the State via private or public transportation may be required. If required, travel may involve one or more overnight stays.
