Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist for the Perelman School of Medicine Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery will coordinate activities between the laboratories of, Dr. Kenneth Margulies (Penn-Medicine), Dr. Mark Oyama (Penn Vet) and Dr. Robert Levy (Principal Investigator of the NIH project funding the Penn subcontract, CHOP-Cardiology) to facilitate translational heart valve disease research studies. The individual will work closely with Principal Investigators and associated researchers on this NIH supported project concerned with serotonin mechanisms that contribute to the progression of heart valve disease. The Research Specialist will collaborate with clinical cardiothoracic research teams at Penn and CHOP and animal research teams at the Penn Vet School.
**Job Description**:
This position is contingent upon favorable funding.
Job Responsibilities
- Consenting patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery for research studies
- Collection, processing, recording in databases and storage of surgical heart valve specimens obtained from the operating room
- Organize storage of valve specimens and blood samples in a biobank storage facility
- Data extraction from patient charts and data entry into a research database that is directly associated with the heart valve biobank.
- Preparation of biological samples (including blood and tissue specimens) for research use
- Prepare concise quarterly updates on the procurement and utilization of specimens and data.”
- Facilitate communication and coordination among researchers at multiple institutions
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Background in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology
- Experience working with recruiting patients to donate tissue for research studies; familiarity with patient charts, patient demographics and clinical information
- Computing skills including maintaining databases, word processing, and elementary statistics
- Strong communication and record keeping skills
- Familiarity and experience with the following laboratory techniques: processing clinical samples, histology, cell culture, immunoassays, and data analysis
- Able to present research and scientific data in a professional setting
**Qualifications**:
- Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Bachelor's in relevant field (biology, chemistry, genetics, etc.) preferred.
