**Dog Behavior Manager**

**APA BACKGROUND**: Austin Pets Alive (APA) is one of Austin’s most dynamic and best-loved nonprofits. The organization is the leader in the no kill movement nationally and is considered a national thought leader in animal welfare. APA locally rescues, treats, and adopts out 10,000 homeless dogs and cats each year, providing the safety net for Austin’s most at-risk shelter pets, which helps Austin to be a no-kill city, while also assisting other communities in saving homeless animals. The organization is distinguished by the scrappiness of its grassroots, non-traditional community-based animal rescue work.

The organization continues to innovate best practices to save lives and teaches its renowned lifesaving model through American Pets Alive, APA’s national division. In 2020, AmPA began the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project, a collaborative movement of more than 10,000 animal welfare professionals working in nearly 1,900 organizations. HASS is the first-of-its-kind collective of shelters and animal welfare professionals coming together to build community-focused animal services that better meet the needs of people and pets by keeping human-animal families together and keeping pets unnecessarily out of shelters.

**BRIEF /OVERVIEW**: The Dog Programs at Austin Pets Alive serve as a vital part of the No Kill movement in Austin and the surrounding regions by developing models for identifying and rescuing at-risk dogs, caring for dogs with medical and behavioral challenges in an effective, humane, and respectful manner, and supporting these dogs through adoption and in their new homes. The Dog Behavior Program Manager plays a crucial role within APA's Dog Programs by providing support, education, and leadership to the Dog Behavior Team; improving the mental and emotional well-being of the dogs in our care, upholding the highest standards of safety, and ensuring that all of our dogs are on track to safe and successful outcomes. Collaborating closely with the Dog Behavior Program Director, you will set ambitious goals, pioneer new initiatives, and enhance existing systems to further improve the program and elevate its impact in the community.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:
**Program Management**:

- Work closely with the Dog Behavior Director to drive continuous improvement to the Dog Behavior Program through strategic innovation and strong execution of goals set forth
- Establish and maintain a system for tracking and analyzing data related to dog behavior and training outcomes; utilizing insights to optimize program's effectiveness and the overall well-being and adoptability of dogs in our care
- Supply ordering as needed, with a focus on setting up a reliable system to obtain necessary supplies through in-kind donations
- Collaborate with all departments to enhance efficiency, optimize outcomes, boost morale, foster communication, align goals, and spearhead new initiatives
- Create agendas and lead team and interdepartmental meetings

**Team Management**:

- Provide direct support to Supervisors and Coordinators in their professional development, and in setting goals, implementing plans, maintaining oversight, and improving efficacy in each of their respective departments
- Create and implement onboarding, training, and progress tracking processes for all team members; with a focus on support, education, safety, and development
- Promote a positive team culture; supporting respect, solution-based communication, collaboration, and mentorship
- Partner with Volunteer Managers to learn about the volunteer programs, create pathways for volunteer integration, and manage volunteers interested in your department on an ongoing basis

**Dog Income/Outcome Management**
- Establish and maintain a system for tracking and analyzing data related to dog behavior and training outcomes; utilizing insights to optimize program's effectiveness, safety measures, and the overall well-being and adoptability of dogs in our care
- Manage the prioritization and flow of dogs coming into the Behavior Program from partner shelter’s euthanasia lists
- Conduct daily rounds of animals in our care, following through with plan creation and implementation
- Participate in decision-making and euthanasia recommendations with respect to established euthanasia guidelines and procedures
- Job duties may include some or all of the above, and other duties as assigned by the Director

**OTHER FUNCTIONS**:

- Improve the dog behavior literacy of APA staff and volunteers, emphasizing understanding dog communication and reducing risk of bites to people
- Attend and participate in all required training sessions and meetings
- Maintain open, timely, and consistent communication with Program Director or designee, supervisor, and other colleagues
- Involvement in extra partner programs as needed
