Job Description Summary

The Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) provides the expertise, business process, policies and standards required to plan, design, construct, operate, maintain and renew the physical assets of the University, excluding the health system. In addition, the Division, comprised of approximately five Departments, is responsible for the strategic planning, management and operation of non-academic University property, and collaborating with the neighborhood to create a safe, diverse and economically vibrant destination. With close to 12M square feet of space, FRES maintains 186 buildings on a campus of 276 acres, completes over 60,000 maintenance requests per year, and starts approximately 250 projects a year. FRES is comprised of the following Departments: Administration, Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Maintenance.

**Job Description**:
DUTIES:
The University Landscape Architect (ULA) oversees and directs all landscape planning and design stewardship of Penn’s 300-acre “Urban Park” campus in West Philadelphia. The campus features over 6,500 trees in its collection, over 240 species of trees and shrubs and ten specialty gardens. The ULA coordinates the care of a comprehensive tree management program, maintaining our annual Tree Campus USA designation and formal recognition as an accredited ArbNet Level 2 Arboretum. The University’s award-winning Penn Connects campus development plan added 30 acres of new open space since 2006, including Penn Park, Shoemaker Green and Kane Park. The 2010 acquisition of the 23-acre Pennovation Works campus is also within the ULA’s portfolio. The ULA oversees the design review of all capital project site improvements and maintains a list of priority projects for FRES funding approval. The ULA also works with Penn Development and Alumni Relations to align potential landscape and site improvement projects with alumni-sponsored donation opportunities and coordinates the site management needs of annual events including Homecoming, Alumni Weekend and Commencement. The ULA supervises the Landscape Planner, Assistant Landscape Planner, and Morris Arboretum staff under an annual consulting contract, collaborates with FRES Operations and Maintenance Urban Park leadership, and private contractors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Education: Masters in Landscape Architecture Degree (MLA) required.
- Certification: Professional Registered Landscape Architect (RLA)
- Work Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years' experience, serving in a supervisory role, overseeing and contributing to the design and management of a broad range of landscapes required. 10 or more years' experience and knowledge and experience serving in a large arboretum or institutional setting preferred.
- Design Review: Experience in reviewing design and construction documentation and giving constructive guidance to professional landscape architects.
- Operations and Maintenance: Coordination and collaboration with landscape management consultants, arborists, gardeners and operations/maintenance staff.
- Budget: Experience in reviewing cost estimation of landscape design and capital planning projects.
