There is a lot of moving parts in our business, and as a repairer, you help run and maintain the latest emergency service technology, equipment, and fleet for the District.

This position is located in the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, Fleet Management Division. In this role, you will independently inspect heavy-duty firefighting equipment, ambulances, trucks and, automobiles. Heavy Equipment repairers serve our internal customers by performing complete safety inspections on equipment according to established industry standards to ensure D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services provides the best possible service.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

Inspect equipment at fire stations to determine the nature of the trouble, make repairs, or conduct equipment maintenance. If required, arranges to have the apparatus brought to the Fleet Management Division. Overhauls large and small multi-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines, by dissembling and inspecting for defective parts, installing and adjusting main bearings, piston rings, pistons, connecting rods and bearings, writs pins, checking cylinder walls for excessive wear or scoring, grinding, refacing, and resurfacing valves, testing, work crank for out roundness and taper.

Uses diagnostic equipment to retrieve data from onboard computers to analyze and repair engine, transmission, and antilock brake systems. Uses computer software to retrieve data from a database of the vehicle information to aid in the diagnosis and repair of vehicle and equipment. Test apparatus, vehicles, and small engines and perform complete safety inspections.

**Working Condition/Environment**

Works in a garage or from a mobile service vehicle and is required to make repairs under fire ground conditions, which will expose the mechanic to toxic fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. Frequently exposed to acids, fuels, and lubricants, which may prove irritating to the skin. Uses safety equipment such as breathing apparatus, protective clothing, hard hats, etc., at various times. Subject to cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while positioning or moving equipment. Subject to discomfort caused by drafts, dust, heat, and fumes while lying on hard floors or ground. Frequently exposed to noise from cutting and hammering operations; typically works on systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy.

Works inside and outside in all types of weather due to the equipment involved. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases while working on ambulances and ambulance equipment; the employee must supply tools, other than special tools related to the job.

**Tour of Duty**:Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

The Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation. Rotating and weekend shift.

**Residency Preference**:Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
