**Reporting**:This position reports to the School Director

**Purpose**
Teaches self-contained classes in kindergarten through grade five in elementary schools, and/or core classes in grades six through eight in accordance with the requirements of approved courses of study and at a rate and level commensurate with established expected student progress expectations, using adopted textbooks and other instructional materials authorized for such courses.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Use information about individual students’ academic strengths, needs, and progress in planning. Designs activities to engage students in cognitively challenging work aligned to standards
- Submit daily lesson plans per the Director’s instruction
- Create comprehensive projects, chapter and/or unit tests, as well as common periodic assessments and other classroom formative assessments
- Follow the guidelines established to monitor student attendance
- Assess student progress using the Director’s prescribed methods
- Use resources that will promote high levels of learning and student engagement in the classroom environment
- Work effectively with students, parents, staff members, and community representatives in providing a rigorous educational program
- Participate and contribute in grade-level meetings designed to develop, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum
- Closely monitor student learning in order to understand how students are progressing toward the learning objectives and provides students with instructive and timely feedback that will move their learning forward
- Establish a classroom environment that is safe and supportive, where risk-taking is encouraged and students feel free to contribute their ideas
- Communicate with families to create a partnership around student learning by providing information about the instructional program and the progress of their child(ren) o Hold parent/student/teacher conferences in a manner consistent with Watts

Learning Center’s policies and procedures including back-to-school night
- Use detailed data analysis of student performance to inform best practices and to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
- Identify students who are academically at risk of not meeting standards and initiating effective intervention strategies
- Initiate or participate in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings with administrators, faculty, parents, and other parties involved to develop an IEP for eligible students
- Provide clear behavior expectations for students and monitor student behavior throughout the class and school campus
- Reinforce school-wide rules and expectations in the classroom and elsewhere on campus.
- Develop a Positive Behavior Support Plan for students
- Continue professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.

**Qualifications**:

- A valid CA English Learner Authorization
- A demonstrated commitment to protect the safety, interests, and rights of all students in the classroom and on the school grounds
- Experience and interest in working with underserved populations

**Physical Demands**
Spends the majority of the day standing and sitting in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold light objects they are working and demonstrating, etc. These can be held from waist level to slightly above the teacher’s head. Teacher must be able to walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks. Dealing with students can entail kneeling or squatting, stooping and bending from 50-70 degrees at the waist on an occasional to frequent basis on a given day. The chalkboard or white board is occasionally to frequently used which can require grasping the chalk or marker or eraser, reaching at, below or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity and may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at class.

Teachers may be required to assist in physical education on a rotating basis and this would occasionally involve lifting, using both upper extremities while assisting the child. The teacher may be required to do playground/yard duty, which involves walking on even and uneven surfaces including pea gravel and negotiating a 6” curb.

The teacher may use computers, overhead projectors, TV, VCR, etc. which would require a 10- pound force to push or pull the TV/VCR stand. The overhead projector requires 5 pounds of force to move. When working with equipment it may also be necessary to forward bend, squat, and/or kneel.

The teacher often moves children’s desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence teaching situations. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to
