**Position Summary**:
Fortune Society’s Food & Nutrition Department is hiring a Horticulture Programming Assistant (HPA) to aid in the implementation of our Garden to Plate programming. The HPA will work with our Horticultural Therapist and Food Access & Nutrition Services Manager to hold weekly gardening workshops at our Castle Gardens (CG), Academy, and Freedom House Bronx (FHBx) locations between June 1 and September 15. The goal of the Garden to Plate programming is to increase the Fortune Community’s access to fresh produce by building garden spaces, teaching organic food production skills, and demonstrating how to prepare nutritious meals with the produce grown.

**Mission, Culture and Fit**:
The HPA needs to match the mission and culture of Fortune, including, meeting a client where they are; engaging participants with a non-judgmental, inclusive attitude; holding space for trauma associated with criminal justice involvement and incarceration; and helping them to believe in their power to change.

Horticultural Knowledge:
The HPA should demonstrate an understanding of horticultural principles, food production, and environmental sustainability. Knowledge of food systems and an interest in community-based approaches to food justice are essential.

Time Management/Organizational Skills:
The HPA needs to be able to plan and execute projects/program activities within a given timeframe, while keeping accurate records of activities and documenting programmatic inputs and outputs.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
The HPA should be able to convey horticultural information clearly, motivate and educate clients, collaborate with team members, and build positive relationships with external partners. Effective communication also involves active listening, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to address the needs of diverse populations.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**:
Garden Maintenance/Program Facilitation
- Assist in the construction and maintenance of garden spaces at our CG, Academy, and Freedom House Bronx locations, including the creation of garden maps/designs, crop plans, along with the installation of raised beds and composting systems.
- Facilitate weekly garden programming at CG, Academy, FHBx. This involves working with Fortune clients and community members to teach organic food production skills in community garden spaces and track program activities.

Compost Maintenance
- Install and maintain composting systems at CG, Academy, and Freedom House Bronx.
- Program outreach, including recruiting Fortune clients/residents to participate in food scrap collection, and training Fortune staff on food scrap collection procedures.
- Collect food scraps from Academy kitchen and maintain compost bins at CG, Academy, Freedom House Bronx.
- Track inputs and outputs.

**Qualifications**:

- Experience and commitment to working with criminal justice-involved participants;
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally-competent manner;
- Strong Microsoft Office and Excel, and database entry skills;
- Strong engagement skills;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus;
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.

Travel Requirements: May require travel to community-based sites.
