Assistant Corporation Counsel
Annual Salary $53,372 - $129,854

Are you looking for a rewarding and challenging opportunity to make a difference in the community? The Milwaukee County Corporation Counsel is now hiring for an Assistant Corporation Counsel to join a team of dedicated professionals serving the people of Milwaukee County.

The Office of the Corporation Counsel (OCC) serves as the chief legal counsel to all Milwaukee County departments, offices, boards, commissions and elected officials concerning a wide range of civil legal issues that impact the County and the public.

**Job Summary**: Under the supervision of Chief Corporation Counsel and Deputy Corporation Counsel, Assistant Corporation Counsel is responsible for providing accurate, high-quality, and practical legal advice in, among other legal areas: labor and employment; real estate; contracting; land use; information management; County and board governance; risk management; public records (open records requests) and open meetings. Assistant Corporation Counsel represents the County in litigation and other proceedings in state and federal court and before administrative agencies.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Effectively carry out all tasks in the relevant litigation/dispute processes in state and federal court, before administrative agencies including the EEOC and ERD, and labor arbitration. Handle all aspects of Chapters 51, 54, and 55 proceedings including appeals. Involves legal research, drafting, motion practice, depositions, hearings, mediation and trials.
- Conduct internal due diligence, investigation, and legal research. Provide accurate, practical and timely legal advice on a variety of issues including county and board governance, public record matters, risk management and others arising under municipal, state and federal law. Prepare written advisory opinions.
- Contribute to the OCC’s internal process and procedure improvements. Work to support OCC’s culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and of ownership, accountability, and responsibility. Contribute to the County’s efforts to fulfill its mission of becoming the healthiest county in Wisconsin by achieving racial equity.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- Must be a current resident of the State of Wisconsin.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and a member in good standing of the State Bar of Wisconsin.
- At least one (1) year of civil litigation experience.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel and the ability to use related software.

**Preferred Knowledge and/or Experience**:
Experience in a municipal or government setting and previous experience prosecuting and defending civil litigation and administrative actions. Specialized knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes Chapters 51,54, and 55 is desired, but not mandatory.
