**Responsibilities**:
The UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute (LPPI) and UCLA Voting Right Project (VRP) seeks a one-year data science fellow to train under the Data Scientist, Faculty Director, and litigation team, and assist the UCLA Voting Rights Project on democracy and voting data projects. LPPI champions nonpartisan, evidence-based domestic policy solutions that improve the economic, political, and social landscape for Latinos and other communities of color in states and localities across the U.S. The VRP conducts innovative research in the democracy space, focusing on advancing our understanding of voter turnout and engagement. As voting rights and voting related work continues to become more technical, there is a need to train young data scientists. Type of Supervision Received/Exercised: VRP is seeking newly graduated doctoral students or persons with relevant graduate degrees with two to three years of experience with demographics and population data from the Census Bureau and/or voter file, precinct, and election data for a 12-month Data Science Fellow position. The purpose of the data science fellowship is to learn and build upon technical data skills using analytical software programs such as R (RStudio), ESRI, Maptitude and other relevant software. The Data Science Fellow will support real-world projects and the data needs of organizational partners committed to advancing voting rights. The fellowship will be a hands-on, intensive program that includes: - Extensive data science training on utilizing census data, redistricting data, and voter file data;
- Coding workshops to strengthen skills in programs including Stata and RStudio;
- Training on mapping using online programs and Esri Redistricting and Maptitude;
- Writing seminars focused on effective writing for different audiences (public, academic, legislators, etc.) when writing public reports and scholarly papers;
- Training with UCLA faculty and scholars in political science, statistics, demography, public policy, GIS, information sciences, and law school;
- Hands-on data science training working on real-world projects for partner organizations committed to democracy and effective government;

- 1-3 Years Applicants must also have at least one year of relevant professional experience (two to three years preferred) (preferred)
- Experience working in an academic or think-tank environment. (preferred)
- Experience with cloud computing and Big Data frameworks a plus (preferred)
- Project Management Experience (preferred)
- Intermediate SQL skills, Python or R, and data visualization. (required)
- Attention to detail and ability to organize and document workflow (required)
- Strong initiative and a resourceful approach to problem-solving (required)
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical results and Required recommendations to non-technical stakeholders (required)

- Substantive knowledge or experience in voting rights (preferred)
- Substantive knowledge of SQL database internals, including query optimization, indexing, and execution plans (preferred)
- Substantive knowledge of the design and implementation of ETL pipelines, relational databases, and data warehouses. Experience with cloud computing and Big Data frameworks a plus (preferred)
- Substantive knowledge of quantitative research methods including machine learning and statistics. Knowledge of causal inference methods a plus. (preferred)

- PhD Degree in Computer Science, statistics, economics, mathematics or other relevant field. (preferred) Or
