**Position Summary**

The Garden Educator conducts Garden School Foundation’s (GSF) _Seed to Table_ education program at one or more of our school gardens. Our program serves 10 Title 1 public elementary schools in historically underserved neighborhoods in Metro Los Angeles. We are currently seeking educators for gardens located in Carson, Watts, and Mar Vista.

Duties include: conduct garden-based science and nutritional cooking classes in an outdoor garden setting and in a cooking classroom, following GSF’s curriculum; help train and oversee interns and volunteers; cultivate a positive working relationship with your host schools; attend occasional evening and weekend school events, including Community Garden Days; conduct tours of the gardens and host an array of visitors; and assist with off-site events, workshops, and other special tasks as assigned; maintain the gardens and classroom areas ensuring they are safe and hygienic; edit GSF curriculum as assigned.

The Garden Educator will work directly with the GSF Executive Director, school staff and parent community, and fellow GSF staff and volunteers.

Educators at school sites with the Cafeteria to Compost (C2C) Program will also help facilitate the program through coordination with C2C Program Manager and team members. Duties include: participation in maintaining composting systems, filling in for lunchtime collection as needed, attending weekly team meetings, and managing multiple lines of communication.

**About Garden School Foundation**

Garden School Foundation provides in-depth garden-based education to youth at Title I schools in Los Angeles, strengthening connections between food justice, environmental awareness, and community health. By using the full transformative potential of school gardens as teaching sites, we nurture a healthy and mindful generation of children that care for their bodies, their communities, and the earth. We currently serve ten Title I elementary schools, reaching over 3,200 students and their families each year.

**About **_**Seed to Table**_ **Classes**

Students visit the garden during the school day every other week, alternating between science-based gardening and nutritional cooking classes. These learning experiences extend to students’ families and the surrounding community through monthly Community Garden Days and other events. At each school site, classes are led by a trained GSF Garden Educator who maintains the garden as a living laboratory, works with classroom teachers to complement their instruction, conducts outreach to the school community and broader neighborhood, coordinates garden volunteers, and facilitates extended learning opportunities, including after school clubs and weekend community garden workdays.

- Note: All below listed duties are based on viability during Covid restrictions and following all necessary Covid protocols. Should Covid-related restrictions be reimposed for LAUSD, your core teaching may be performed in-person, virtually, or a combination._

**Roles and Responsibilities**

**Core Teaching, Sept. - June: 50% of responsibilities**
- Plan and implement garden and cooking classes in the garden and in cooking classrooms using our Standards aligned, K-5th _Seed to Table_ curriculum.
- Purchase, prepare, and maintain all teaching and cooking supplies with GSF funds
- Work with school leadership, staff, and classroom teachers to schedule the rotation of classes and align GSF lessons with classroom teachers’ instructional priorities whenever possible.
- Host students in their gardens during recess as their teaching schedules allow, and as approved by school leadership.
- Secure GSF’s tasting waivers for all students.
- Send copies (English and Spanish) of _every recipe _with students at the end of Cooking Class (or via their teacher or class dojo).
- Work with interns and Climate Action Corps Fellows (when applicable) to develop their teaching and gardening skills.
- Train and work with volunteers on cooking and garden projects.
- Conduct tours of your garden fora diverse array of visitors, as needed.
- Secure the minimum desired return percentage of GSF’s pre-and post-program student surveys (95%), family surveys ( 30%), and teacher surveys (95%); GSF admin support will be provided where needed).
