**Overview**

The Early Literacy Instructional Coach reports to the Director of Literacy. They will assist in the implementation of the KIPP SoCal early literacy approach, with a primary focus on literacy and driving student achievement outcomes in grades K-2. All efforts driven by the Instructional Coach will be in service of an equitable, inclusive, rigorous, and diverse learning experience in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for all students.

**Primary Responsibilities**:

- Collaborate with the other Literacy Coaches, Director of Literacy, and Directors of Schools to create the enabling systems to realize the regional early literacy vision and goals, and drive quality early literacy instructional practices with fidelity and precision at schools in the portfolio
- Support 2-4 elementary schools by: building the literacy coaching skills of leadership teams, directly leading content team meetings for teacher and leaders, leading and providing feedback in the coaching cycles with LT members and a select group of teachers, and working with school teams to analyze data (primarily DIBELS, OCR, Wit+Wisdom and iReady) to drive instructional decision making, and providing coaching to leadership teams on data analysis practices, as needed
- Work closely with School Leadership to integrate literacy priority work into whole school planning, roles+responsibilities, and progress monitoring and accountability systems, and coaches school leader and leadership team to strengthen the skills needed to implement literacy work with high quality
- Implement KIPP SoCal teacher preparation practices into schools through content teams and coaching with with leadership teams Lead any adaptation efforts to early literacy curricula to better meet the needs of students (e.g. adjusting lessons / units per the gradual release of responsibility instructional framework).
- Monitor and lead the creation and adjustment of regional scopes and sequences for early literacy
- Monitor and, when relevant, lead the creation of regional formative and summative early literacy assessments
- Conduct literacy observations and literacy walkthroughs in collaboration with the Director of Literacy, Director of Teaching and Learning, Directors of Schools, CAO and school site-level instructional leaders.
- Lead the planning and delivery of regional professional development in early literacy
- Plan and lead professional development at schools in literacy on an ad hoc or on-going basis based on individual schools’ needs in literacy
- Coach and develop specific teachers and leaders across schools when needed
- Collaborate with the Director of Literacy to craft a personalized professional learning plan (e.g. text study, workshops, conferences, school visits, etc.) to build knowledge and capacity in early literacy content and teaching and learning instructional methods and practices

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor’s Degree (required)
- 4-5 years of teaching related experience, preferably in schools with demographics similar to KIPP SoCal, and with evidence of student mastery and growth that outperform district/state averages in all or most student groups and with students of all skill levels
- At least 2 years of experience of driving student results and growth through the coaching and/or managing of other school leadership team members, e.g. coaching principals is a main feature of this job so applicants with this experience will be most competitive
- At least 2 years of experience coaching TK-3GR teachers to achieve student results in literacy and reading
- Deep experience with and knowledge of best practice research methods for early literacy and language acquisition grounded in the science of reading
