Water/ Wastewater Operator

The Algoma Sanitary District has a municipal water system with 3 groundwater treatment facilities, 40 miles of water main, supplying safe drinking water to 1200 homes with a 400,000-gallon elevated storage tank. The utility also has a sewer collection system of 11 lift stations, 30 grinder pumps, 4 metering flow stations, and 66 miles of sanitary sewer main that handles over.8 MGD for a population of 10,000 people.

This position is responsible for controlling the processes to generate safe drinking water and maintaining all of the District equipment. This will include drinking water chemical testing and documenting the results while making required adjustments to meet state and federal regulations. This position includes maintenance of all the District buildings, grounds, and property to make sure the equipment is always available and ready to be used in case of emergencies. This position will take and deliver required bacterial and regulatory compliance water samples to an independent certified laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications
- Associate Degree in water/wastewater related field
- Possess or have the ability to obtain Wisconsin Water Operator Certificate subclasses including: distribution, groundwater, and iron removal within 6 months.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Certificate within 6 months.
- Knowledge of wastewater lift stations and collection system.
- Knowledge of water treatment and distribution system.
- Be certified in CPR, competent person training, confined space entrance.
- Ability to diagnose operational problems and take corrective course of action.
- Ability to read schematics, blue prints, technical specifications, regulations, permits, procedure, and follow repair manuals.
- Wisconsin Driver’slicense.
- May require overtime.

Job Duties

Including the following but not limited to:

- Monitor and adjust the operation of water plant pumps, motors, and other equipment.
- Daily checks of water treatment process, lift stations, and flow stations recording meter and gauge readings.
- Perform chemical analysis in laboratory and document results.
- Verify the water quality is meeting all State and Federal safe drinking water standards.
- Reading, servicing, and replacing drinking water meters.
- Maintenance of pumps, buildings, yards, equipment, collection and distribution system.
- Share on call duty.
- Respond to emergency conditions within 20 minutes when on call.
- Trouble shoot and repair all electrical or mechanical problems.
- Use a SCADA system to identify and correct problems prior to emergency situation.
- Work in confined spaces, trenches, and on ladders.
- Construction observation and inspection.
- Surveying grades for water and sewer projects.
- Gather GPS/GIS locations and develop maps using Arc GIS software.
- Operation of heavy equipment including excavator and end loaders.
- Repair damaged water/sewer mains and leaking services.
- Annually flush all hydrants and exercise every water system valve.
- Jetting and televising sewer mains to locate and reduce infiltration and inflow.
- Repair manhole chimney seals and adjust elevations for pavement projects.
- Operate stationary and portable electric generators and bypass pumps.
- Performs work in accordance with all Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations and within mandated and appropriate safety standards.
- Requires working in inclement weather to correct conditions that affect the safe and efficient operation of the water and wastewater systems.
- Locate and mark District utilities for all digger hotline notifications.
- Locate water leaks using leak detection equipment.
- Complete cross connection inspections.
