**Duties**:
The Supervisory Museum Specialist assists the Chief of CPU in collections care and personnel management of the unit. He/She reports to and works under the general supervision of the Chief of CPU serving both as a skilled member of the unit and as a supervisor of a team of museum technicians/specialists in the handling, storage, shipping, maintenance, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts from the National Collections. The CPU also maintains records of artifacts by regular entry of information in the computerized collections information databases. Teams are comprised of museum technicians/specialists of varying grades and may include contracted support. This position also provides direction to interns, and volunteers who support the unit.

**In this position, you will**:

- Develop work schedules and assigns tasks based on an approved project schedule, taking into account the individual and team skills of the staff.
- Review work in progress to ensure that assigned deadlines are met or adjusted and that completed work meets stated objectives of accuracy and timeliness.
- Initiate, review, and approve personnel actions to include: promotions, reassignments, performance plans and appraisals, and disciplinary actions. Provides counsel on a routine basis concerning subordinates work skills, training, efficiency, and leave scheduling.
- Accomplish regular tasks along with the designated team include the preservation, cataloging, storage, maintenance, handling, preparation for shipping and receiving, packing and movement of artifacts which vary greatly in size and fragility.
- Supervise and accomplish the movement of historically significant artifacts from storage for restoration/preservation, study, or exhibit.
- Design and construct and/or supervise others in the design and construction of cradles, dollies, and other supports necessary to ensure safe handling, movement, relocation, and storage of artifacts.

**Qualifications**:
**GS-12 Experience**:You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. **For this position, specialized experience is defined as**:

- Experience supervising staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors in a museum environment.
- Experience in a museum setting handling aeronautical and space artifacts such as: aircraft, aircraft engines, satellites, spacecraft. Handling aerospace artifacts which includes: moving and storing of aforementioned types of artifacts by utilizing equipment such as forklifts, gantries, pallet jacks, dollies, and vehicles; disassembling, assembling, loading, unloading, securing, cradling, or creating mounts for artifacts.
- Experience packing and crating artifacts for transportation, considering their fragility, size, and material composition while selecting appropriate packing materials, such as acid-free tissue paper, foam, or padding, and using proper techniques to create protective enclosures or crates

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

**Education**:
Education cannot be substituted as experience for this position at the GS-12 grade level.

**Additional information**:
This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
