The Public Policy and Strategic Communications Specialist will be responsible for the Chamber’s Government Affairs activities and lead public relations efforts for all Chamber activities. This is not a Hartford lobbying position. The focus is on mobilizing the business community around issues that are important for the New Haven Region using grass roots techniques. The Chamber deals with federal, state, and local issues.
This position will also support branding and communications around the Chamber’s key initiatives in workforce and economic development as well as other topics. This person will work closely with the Chamber’s marketing and communications team. This position will be the Chamber’s primary contact with media organizations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Identify policy initiatives for the Chamber to support
- Draft the Chamber’s annual legislative agenda and other policy positions
- Summarize current activities/actions at the State Capitol
- Liaison to the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee
- Support the Regional Leadership Council
- Monitor municipal governments in the New Haven region (attendance at evening town/city meetings will sometimes be required)
- Establish positive working relationships with the region’s 15 chief elected officials and regional state legislators
- Manage information campaigns around specific initiatives and policies using multiple media platforms
- Interact with the news media for all Chamber events and activities
- Manage the program for the Chamber’s Legislative Forum and Public Policy Summit
- Meet with state legislators in their districts
- Write press releases and event scripts for other Chamber events (Annual Meeting, Health Care Forum, etc.)
- Work closely with the Vice President for Marketing & Events
- Create coalitions and action plans in order to affect change
- Support the Chamber’s inclusive growth and workforce development activities
- Assist with other Chamber activities as needed
Qualifications Needed for this Position:
- Bachelor’s Degree in either Business Management or other related field
- 1-3 years experience in a business environment
- Public policy, political campaign, or lobbying experience
- Proficient with social media and other outreach platforms
- Great people skills and a professional demeanor
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent project management skills
