Baltimore, United States Good Shepherd United Methodist Church Full time

**Position Description: Director of Music**

**Reports To**:Rev. Chet Jechura, Pastor of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church

Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is a small, faithful, and inclusive urban ministry located in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore City. We are called to care for the needs of God’s children within and beyond our walls. As such, we are a mission-driven and community-focused congregation and we understand service and outreach to be an extension of our worship.

Music is an important element in the life of our church. The Director of Music collaborates with the pastor, members of the congregation and community, and other musicians. The Director of Music honors creativity and authenticity, understands music not as a performance, but as a vital part of worship that engages the mind, warms the heart, and stirs the spirit.

As a person of character who is dedicated to Good Shepherd UMC’s commitment to be inclusive of all God’s beloved children no matter their ethnic background, physical or cognitive ability, gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation, the Director of Music is a creative, flexible, and organized team player, who can draw out excellence in others, while helping to build community and have fun in the process.

The Director of Music is available to work 3-5 hours each week, as well as provide music for special services (e.g., Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Blue Christmas/Longest Night, Christmas Eve, and occasional memorial services as requested), and conducts one weekly hour-long rehearsal with the choir. The Director of Music will play the piano and/or electric organ regularly for our one Sunday morning worship service at 10:00 a.m. and we remain open to competency in other types of musical instruments.

The Director of Music will receive $200 per service, made payable in one monthly paycheck via direct deposit at the end of each month. The Director of Music is offered six services off per year, four of which will be paid. In the event that the Director of Music will be off, they must communicate any foreseeable absences to the pastor at least two months in advance in order for a substitute to be confirmed.

**The Director of Music will**:

- Schedule and manage rehearsals with members of the choir.
- Nurture and encourage talent, both vocal and instrumental, within the congregation.
