**Duties**:
As a General Biological Scientist, GS-0401-13/14, your typical work assignments may include:

- Providing authoritative advice concerning scientific concepts, potential threats, and impacts of biological agents and other hazards to senior managers of DHS and other agencies and to representatives of foreign governments and entities.
- Conducting projects and studies which require analysis of interrelated issues of effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of substantive mission-oriented programs.
- Developing detailed plans, goals, and objectives for long range implementation and administration of the program, and/or developing criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the program.
- Participating as active member or leader of panels, committees, and task forces concerning innovative research and development objectives, international programs and projects, and new and emerging threats and technologies

**Qualifications**:
**Basic requirements for the GS-0401 **General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series**:

- **Degree**: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

or
- **Combination of education and experience**: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

**Specialized Experience**:
You qualify for the **GS-13** grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the **GS-12** grade level in the Federal government, performing duties such as:
You qualify for the **GS-14** grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the **GS-13** grade level in the Federal government, performing duties such as:
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.

- Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
- **Current or Former Political Appointees**: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
